PHILADELPHIA - A man was shot and killed in South Philadelphia late Wednesday when police say he attempted to intervene in a carjacking. The shooting occurred in the area of 12th and Porter streets around 11:45 p.m. Officers responded to a report of a shooting and arrived on the scene to find the 50-year-old victim laying next to a vehicle that was double parked on the 1100 block of Porter Street. The victim succumbed to his injuries after police say he was shot once in the head and neck area. PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia Police Department is investigating an incident that began at FDR Park and ended with lane closures on I-76 West. Authorities say police responded to a report of a shooting on Pattison Avenue in the area of FDR Park in the South Philadelphia section of the city just before 3 a.m. Officers who responded to the scene did not find anything initially, according to Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small. Small told reporters officers found a scene on the westbound lanes of I-76, where a Ford SUV and Infiniti Sedan were involved in a crash. According to authorities, the Ford had eight bullet holes and a 27-year-old victim in the back seat with a gunshot wound to the neck. Small says the shooting victim, who was unable to move due to the gunshot injury, was transported to Presbyterian Hospital, where he is in critical condition. Police say a 32-year-old woman was the driver of the Ford SUV. MORE LOCAL HEADLINESA 22-year-old man was driving the Infiniti and a gun was found on the vehicle's floorboard, authorities say. Investigators say a preliminary investigation revealed the drivers of both vehicles got into an altercation on the 1900 block of Pattison Avenue. According to Small, that's where crime scene technicians found 19 spent shell casings from the shooting. Officials say a PennDOT driver witnessed the incident and told authorities the two cars then drove at a high rate of speed the wrong way on I-76 West. The two vehicles eventually crashed on I-76 as police responded to the scene, police say. The 22-year-old driver of the Infiniti was taken into custody, according to Small. PHILADELPHIA - Catalytic converter thefts are up in Philadelphia since last year, according to police. The recent spike in thefts combined with supply chain issues and worker shortages, is making for a long wait time at the shop and an expensive bill for victims of catalytic converter theft. Authorities say there were more than 3,400 thefts in 2021 and now in 2022, there has been more than 1,300 so far. Depending on the car you own, local auto repair shops say that it could take a month or longer to get the necessary car parts in. Mike Schafer, owner of Schafer’s Auto in South Philadelphia, says that in his 21 years of running the auto shop, he’s never seen anything like what’s been happening recently—6 to 13 cut catalytic converters a week from mostly Mitsubishis, Hondas, and Toyota Priuses."Three days, one month, 3 months wait time for them [parts] to come in," Schafer said.

SOUTH PHILADELPHIA - Police in South Philadelphia are investigating after a man was shot and killed Monday afternoon.Police responded to the 1800 block of South Corlies Street Monday, just after 2:15 p.m., on the report of a shooting, officials said.Responding officers found a 27-year-old man shot three times in the head.The man was taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.Police say the investigation is ongoing.

Pedestrian dies after he is struck by vehicle in South Philadelphia, police say

SOUTH PHILADELPHIA - One man has died after he was struck by a vehicle in South Philadelphia late Sunday night.According to officials, the 31-year-old victim was crossing against the red light at Broad Street and Washington Avenue late Sunday, about 11:40 when he was struck by a person driving a car.The driver stopped at the scene, authorities say.The pedestrian was rushed to Jefferson Hospital suffering from head trauma and other multiple injuries. He was pronounced dead Monday morning.The driver sustained some facial injuries and was also treated at Jefferson Hospital.

Police cruiser set on fire outside 3rd district station in South Philadelphia

SOUTH PHILADELPHIA - Authorities are searching for a person who they say intentionally lit an unoccupied police cruiser on fire early Wednesday morning outside a South Philadelphia police station.Investigators say the cruiser was set ablaze outside the 3rd district station on 11th Street and Wharton Street shortly before 3:30 a.m. The suspect was captured on surveillance footage fleeing the area on a bike.This vehicle fire comes almost exactly one month after police reported several unoccupied police vehicles had been intentionally set on fire in locations across Philadelphia.

PHILADELPHIA - Authorities say an 18-year-old man was among the five people killed by gun violence this weekend in Philadelphia, as ten shootings injured nine others.The spate of gun violence began around 10 p.m. Friday night when authorities say a double shooting on North 39th Street in Mantua claimed the life of a 19-year-old man. Nearly half an hour later police in South Philadelphia say two 24-year-old men were shot and killed on Snyder Avenue.

'March for Peace' hosted in South Philadelphia because of recent shootings

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - At 24th and Wharton Streets in South Philadelphia, Councilman Kenyatta Johnson and other community leaders hosted a rally and march beacuse more than 30 shootings have taken place since late last week, leaving seven people dead.“To me it’s about coming out here and organizing with the community and saying enough is enough,” said Councilman Johnson.Tamika Saunders, a South Philadelphia resident, says that she is discouraged and sad because she knew the family of one of the victims. “I’m very disheartened I grew up in South Philly, born and raised. As soon as I heard it, it bothered me - shook a nerve in me,” Saunders said.
