COLOMBO (News 1st) – The All Ceylon Poultry Traders Association said nearly 50% of farm owners have quit egg production.The Chairman of the All Ceylon Poultry Traders Association Ajith Gunasekara said the imposition of a control price for eggs and the shortage of animal feed was the main reason for this.He said that there may be a shortage of eggs during the upcoming festive season.

Farmers project egg shortage; Minister not hopeful about poultry industry

COLOMBO (News 1st) – The President of All Ceylon Poultry Traders' Association, Ajith Gunasekara says that there may be a shortage of eggs in the future due to the decrease in the import of hens required for poultry farming.He said that currently, the hens owned by farms are also being sold for meat.The Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera also said that the importation of hens required for poultry production has been reduced from 80,000 to 10,000.The minister said that he is not hopeful about the future of the poultry industry under the current circumstances.Therefore he added that authorities are looking at short-term solutions such as providing the necessary animal feed to keep the poultry industry running and sustain it through means sourced from within the country rather than through imports.

COLOMBO (News 1st) – The All Ceylon Poultry Producers Association says that 1kg of frozen chicken with skin will be sold at a price between Rs.1300 and Rs.1350 today (19).The Chairman of the All Ceylon Poultry Producers Association Ajith Gunasekara said that the members of the association will meet and discuss regarding the continuous release of poultry products to the market.Mainly, he said that the cost of poultry production can be reduced if animal feed is received.
