PVR expects cinemas to reopen by July or August

NEW DELHI : India’s largest multiplex chain, PVR Cinemas expects movie theatres to reopen in a staggered manner by the end of July or beginning of August. As of now, the ministry of home affairs and individual state governments have strictly prohibited the opening of cultural and entertainment spaces across the country owing to the covid-19 outbreak. Film theatres have remained shut across India since mid-March with Irrfan Khan-starrer Angrezi Medium standing out as the last film to hit screens.

‘Cinema has sustained itself during recessions’

With movie houses forced to down shutters across the country, India’s film production and exhibition business has been hit severely. In fact, according to the Multiplex Association of India, even before the cinema halls were closed down, footfall had declined by 30% between 1 February and 24 March following the covid-19 outbreak. Ajay Bijli, chairman and managing director, PVR Ltd, India’s largest cinema exhibition chain, has urged the government to help the industry stay afloat during this unprecedented global crisis.
