Over €2.5m in Covid-19 fines issued since beginning of year

Gardaí have issued more than €2.5 million in Covid-19 fines since the beginning of this year. Over half of the total amount (€1.3m) is made up of 13,036 €100 fines for non-essential travel, while over 3,000 fines worth €700,000 were issued to people for either organising or attending a house party.

Separately, 976 people were fined a total of €488,000 for non-essential journeys to airports or ports. The remaining fines issued were for not wearing a face covering (315 fines of €80 each) and for non-essential travel by people not ordinarily resident in the State (339 fines of €100).

In total, 18,125 fines were issued for Covid-19 breaches between the beginning of January and the end of March. The highest number were issued in February
