NEW YORK - Amazon workers on Staten Island, voted to unionize on Friday, marking the first successful U.S. organizing effort in the retail giant’s history and handing an unexpected win to a nascent group that fueled the union drive.Warehouse workers cast 2,654 votes in favor of a union, giving the fledgling Amazon Labor Union enough support to pull off a victory.

According to the National Labor Relations Board, which is overseeing the process, 2,131 workers rejected the union bid.The 67 ballots that were challenged by either Amazon or the ALU were not enough to sway the outcome.

About 57% of the more than 8,300 workers on the voter list cast their ballots.Federal labor officials said the results of the count won’t be verified until they process any objections that both parties may file.

Any objections are due by April 8.The victory was an uphill battle for the independent group, made up of former and current workers who lacked official backing from an established union and were out-gunned by the deep-pocketed retail giant.

NORTH WILDWOOD, N.J. - The City of North Wildwood has terminated its contract with its waste removal company amid threats from the company saying they'd leave trash in the streets, city officials allege. According to a press release from the city, the contract with Gold Medal Environmental New Jersey, Inc. (GME) was terminated. The city says GME is a "subsidiary of the multibillion-dollar private equity firm Kinderhook Industries, headquartered in New York City." According to the city, GME's CEO showed up at the North Wildwood Public Works Building on March 8 insisting that the city pay GME two to three times the agreed upon contract amount or the company would "leave the trash in the streets." According to a legal document sent to GME's leaders, in an email sent on April 25, GME's CEO said: "My message hasn't changed: trash (or recycling or yard waste, etc) will start being left on the streets May 1 (whatever we cannot afford to pick up at current contract prices) if we are not back in good faith negotiations to address this emergency situation as other towns have already, and your offices will choose both where this starts and ends.

WASHINGTON - The Senate Judiciary Committee on Monday planned to vote on whether to advance Ketanji Brown Jackson’s Supreme Court nomination to the full Senate.Jackson would be the first Black woman on the high court in its more than 200-year history, and the sixth woman. After clearing the Senate panel, Democrats will then wind the nomination through the 50-50 Senate — with a final vote in sight for President Joe Biden's pick to replace retiring Justice Stephen Breyer.Jackson previously faced more than 30 hours of hearings and interrogation over her record last month.
