COLOMBO (News 1st); With the Public Utilities Commission (PUCSL) granting permission to the Ceylon Electricity Board (CBSL) to increase power tariffs, the off-peak and daytime tariff applicable to industries has increased exponentially, said the Joint Apparel Association Forum. The initial proposal by the PUCSL suggested the off-peak industrial electricity tariff be increased from Rs 6.85 to Rs 14.50 and the daytime tariff be increased from Rs 11.00 to Rs 18.50. In response, the Joint Apparel Association (JAAF) submitted counter proposals at the stakeholder consultation, identifying the 113% increase in off-peak industrial electricity tariffs to be extraordinarily high and detrimental to the industry. JAAF suggested implementing the final tariff increases in two phases, with the proposed rate being reduced to approximately 50% in each phase. However, JAAF made no counter proposals for the suggested modest revisions for daytime tariffs, as the industry understands that these revisions are mandatory to rectify the massive losses incurred by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB).

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka Railways says that 20 locomotives have been taken out of service due to the shortages of engine oil and spare parts.Deputy General Manager of Railways Gamini Seneviratne says the Railways Department is facing severe difficulties in operating trains according to the usual schedule amidst the unavailability of these locomotives. Although the locomotive fleet of Sri Lanka Railways consists of 74 engines, it has now been reduced to 54 given the shortage of engine oil and spare parts.Gamini Seneviratne said the Ministry of Transport is exploring the possibility of importing Engine Oil as soon as possible.

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) said that the unloading of 100,000 MT of crude oil from a vessel that reached Colombo.A senior official to the CPC said that accordingly, operations of the Sapugaskanda Oil Refinery will resume on the 19th of August.In addition, another vessel carrying 120,000 MT of crude oil is scheduled to reach the country on the 29th of August, the CPC said.

NORRISTOWN, Pa. - A Montgomery County community is mourning the loss of a veteran police officer, cancer survivor, husband and father who was killed in a bicycle accident over the weekend. Corporal Brian Kozera, a 16-year member of the Norristown Police Department, was training in Lancaster County on Saturday for the Ironman World Championship when he was struck by a pickup.Chief Derrick Woods said the driver stayed on scene and the investigation into the fatal crash is ongoing. PHILADELPHIA - As Temple University welcomes students back to campus ahead of the Fall semester, Philadelphia's gun violence crisis continues to spiral out of control leading to safety concerns. According to the latest data from the Philadelphia Police Department, there have been more than 340 homicides in the city this year. That number is outpacing 2021's historically tragic 562 murders by 2%, according to the data.Campus safety has always been a hot-button issue at Temple University, especially after the shooting death of Sam Collington in a botched robbery last fall. Temple University held a virtual forum on gun violence following the shooting death of 21-year-old student Sam Collington. PHILADELPHIA - Authorities say five people were hurt when nearly 100 shot were fired near a playground in West Philadelphia on Tuesday night. Officers from the Philadelphia Police Department responded to the 400 block of North 57th Street around 7 p.m. after hearing gunshots. Police found five people between the ages of 17 and 25 suffering from gunshot wounds, including a 16-year-old and a 21-year-old who were shot in the head. Two others, ages 17 and 25, suffered graze wounds and a 22-year-old was shot in the hand. MORE LOCAL HEADLINESInvestigators believe the shooting happened when two shooters in a white SUV fired multiple rounds and fled the scene. Captain John Walker told reporters that responding officers saw four men pile into a vehicle that fled the scene and later crashed on nearby Farson Street. The men jumped out of the car and tried to run from police, but three were taken into custody.
