COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa said that a new Prime Minister and Government that can command a majority in Parliament and can gain the confidence of the Sri Lankan people will be appointed this week.The President also said that after appointing the new Prime Minister, and Government a constitutional amendment will be moved to enact the content of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, which will vest more powers with the Parliament.” The new government’s Prime Minister will be awarded the opportunity to produce a new program and take this country forward,” said the President.Commenting on the calls to abolish the Presidency, Rajapaksa said that the new government, after establishing stability in the country, will be allowed to discuss the matter with all parties and adopt the necessary measures.“At this time while protecting the people and property, and without allowing the country to fall, I request your support to continuously maintain the state mechanism to provide what is necessary for the day to day lives of the people,” said President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.Speaking on the violence that took place in the nation earlier this week, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa vehemently condemned the root cause of the violence and said that the Inspector General of Police has been instructed to conduct investigations.“The murders, assaults, acts of intimidation, destruction of property, and the series of heinous acts that followed cannot be justified at all,” said the President.“From the moment these events took place, the Defence Secretary, Commanders of the Armed Forces, The Head of Intelligence, as well as the Security Council was convened and measures were taken to bring calm to the country,” he said,.

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka’s Ranil Wickremesinghe who returned to the political sphere as Prime Minister for the sixth time, assumed duties on Friday (13).Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn in on Thursday (12) as the island nation faces political and economic crises.The appointment was made days after Mahinda Rajapaksa, brother of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, vacated the position after violence was triggered by attacks on peaceful protests by pro-government supporters.Ranil Wickremesinghe has been sworn in as the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka on five occasions before.He was first appointed as PM from 1993 – 1994 after the assassination of President Ranasinghe Premadasa.Subsequently, from 2001 to 2004 he was elected as the Prime Minister to lead the United National Front Government during the presidency of President Chandrika Bandaranayake.In January 2015, he was appointed as the Prime Minister of the coalition government on the election of President Maithripala Sirisena.His appointment was sanctioned by the Sri Lankan people at the general election of August 2015.Once again, in December 2018, then-President Sirisena was compelled to appoint him as PM after having dismissed him in October 2018.In November 2019, after the defeat of the UNP presidential candidate, he resigned from his position of Prime Minister.Newly-appointed Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said that the GotaGoGama struggle must continue, and he will not intervene with the struggle.“Police would not do anything to them, and the struggle must continue,” said the Prime Minister during his visit to the Walukaramaya Raja Maha Viharaya in Colombo after taking oaths as the Prime Minister.He said he will show majority from both sides in parliament.

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lankan Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa accepted the President’s invitation to form an interim government.In a letter to the President on Thursday (12), Premadasa said that the Samagi Jana Balawegaya led opposition is willing to form a new interim government in Sri Lanka subject to conditions.One of the conditions put forward by Sajith Premadasa is that the 19th Amendment to the Constitution should be implemented with the support of all political parties within two weeks.Further, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa must resign within a stipulated time period.The third condition is that the President work together with all the political parties to work towards abolishing the Executive Presidency via the 21st Amendment to the Constitution.The fourth condition is that the President must call for Parliamentary Elections to award the people an opportunity to elect a new stable government, following the implementation of the aforementioned constitutional reforms, establishing the rule of law, and returning the people’s lives to normalcy.Sajith Premadasa said that he has a sustainable program to control the fall of the economy and for the implementation of the constitutional reforms.He said he is prepared to for discussions on the swearing in of the new government, and on the period of the said new government.

COLOMBO (News 1st); Leader of the National People’s Power Anura Kumara Dissanayake has stressed the need for President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to resign, and thereafter an interim government can be formed for a period of six months.He further said that the NPP is ready to take control of the Interim Government that will be formed, adding that the support of other parties is required, and if that does not happen the NPP would function in the opposition.Anura Kumara Dissanayake said authorities must arrest the Temple Trees conspirators who created the violence in the country, and produce them before the law.“It is clear that Former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, Ministers, MPs, Pradeshiya Sabha members, and others used state power to plan the violence,” he said calling on authorities to arrest them and produce them in court.Further, he called on the law enforcement agencies, including the IGP and the Police, to take action to maintain the law and the peace in the country.Dissanayake said President Gotabaya Rajapaksa must immediately step down as his ‘solutions’ to the issues have not led to any form of stability in the country.He also called on the Speaker to function as the Acting President, given that Sri Lanka does not have a Prime Minister.He said the Government and Parliament do not represent the public mandate, and since there is no public trust on the government, a new government must be formed.Dissanayake speaking to the media said the NPP is prepared to take control of the interim government, until an election is called for to establish a new government.

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa sent his letter of resignation to the President on Monday (9) after violent scenes were witnessed in Colombo, especially near the two main peaceful protest sites against President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and the premier.Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa in his letter said that he is stepping down to pave way for the All-Party Interim Government to be formed.A normal Monday morning turned in to a scene of chaos, after pro-government supporters attacked the MynaGoGama protest site near Temple Trees following a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, where he announced he is willing to make any sacrifice for the people.The meeting at Temple Trees was organized by the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Local Government Members Forum and saw hundreds in attendance.Following this meeting, the pro-government supporters attacked the MynaGoGama protest site near Temple Trees and dismantled the camp.Thereafter, they moved to the main protest site in Galle Face known as GotaGoGama and destroyed several tents and assaulted peaceful protestors.Sri Lanka Police, the Riot Police, Sri Lanka Army and other law enforcement agencies were called in to control the situation and Sri Lanka Police eventually imposed an island wide curfew to control the unrest.
