Neighbours star Alan Fletcher was forced to address concerns about his health after he appeared in a recent episode with a shaved head. The 65 year old explained that he was "fit and healthy" and the cause of his hair loss was due to alopecia areata - an autoimmune disease that causes hair loss.

In a video shared to the official Twitter account for the soap Neighbours, which is set to come to an end this summer, Alan spoke of his health after receiving worried messages from fans. "Lots of fans have expressed a little concern about my health, and there have been media enquiries as well," he began in the video.

Alan continued: "I just want to put something to rest. I am absolutely fine. I'm fit and well and working on Neighbours and having a great time. "But, I can report to you, I do have a disorder called alopecia areata." Alan noted: "Now, if you watched the Oscars, you know, that's the thing that caused a bit of discord between Will Smith and Chris Rock in referencing Will Smith. "Alopecia areata causes patchy hair loss," he said, adding: "I started to lose hair into my beard and then on my scalp in patches, so eventually I shaved my beard off." "Then my hair became so patchy on my head, I had to get rid of most of that as well." Alan then added: "But while I've got you, I should show you my new look." He then took off his hat to show off his shaved look. The soap star was swarmed with supportive comments, with one person writing: "Thanks for being so open about Alopecia Alan.

It's such a hard thing to deal with for so many people, so thank you for de-stigmatising it!" Another wrote: "You actually suit it very well @alanfletcher pleased to hear you are fit and healthy.
