Inside COVID’s‘InvisibleHospitals’— where the sickest fight to go home
By Carolyn Jarvis and Jasmine PazzanoJanuary 29, 2022 More than 100,000 people have been hospitalized with COVID-19 in Canada since the start of the pandemic. The sickest are discharged from scarce, acute care hospital beds — but aren’t able to return home. Instead, they are admitted to another type of facility: a rehabilitation hospital.

Canadians eager for post-COVID-19 ‘normal’, but mixed on how to get there: poll
COVID-19 pandemic, but a new poll finds mixed opinions on how to achieve that. The Ipsos poll conducted exclusively for Global News did find some consensus, with two-thirds of Canadians saying governments aren’t doing enough to get the country back to normal — even if they can’t agree what politicians should be doing.“Even though we’re saying that we want to get back to something that resembles a normal life, we’re still pretty tentative,” said Darrell Bricker, CEO of Ipsos Public Affairs.“The thing that they’re really saying to us at the moment is they still believe that there is a significant risk out there, particularly with the Omicron variant.” Omicron COVID-19 cases appear to have peaked — but ‘prudence’ still vital: Tam While one in five Canadians surveyed said they already feel like life is returning to normal, an equal number said they’re not sure if they will ever feel comfortable living without masks or vaccine mandates for businesses and workplaces.“I would say that where (Canadians) are right now is on fairly thin ice,” Bricker said.

Health experts weigh in on Kenney’s hopes to lift Alberta pandemic restrictions by end of March
COVID-19 restrictions could be eased by the end of March and that may include the removal of the province’s Restrictions Exemption Program. But while some health officials are cautiously hopeful, others say it’s too soon to put a timeline on any such decisions. The premier made the comments Thursday, as Alberta hit yet another all-time high when it comes to the number of people in hospital with COVID-19 at 1,469. On Friday, hospitalizations increased once again to 1,496. “I’m one of the people that wants to see an end to the Restrictions Exemption Program and as quickly as possible,” the premier said Thursday. However, Kenney also stressed that now is not the time to ease restrictions, noting hospitalizations in Alberta are at the highest they’ve been throughout the entire COVID-19 pandemic.“I very much hope that we can move towards widespread relaxation of public health measures, including the proof of vaccination program, in the foreseeable future once we start to see the pressure on hospitals trend down,” the premier said.

Doug Ford says Ontario needs to ‘learn to live with’ COVID ahead of reopening Monday
COVID-19.Ford made the comments in an interview that aired Friday on a local Peterborough, Ont., radio station, a day after the province’s top doctor made similar remarks.Asked whether Ontario’s reopening plan would work well, Ford said he’s confident it will because virus test positivity has dropped since public health restrictions took effect earlier this month.Restrictions on businesses like restaurants, gyms and theatres will ease on Monday, allowing such venues to open with capacity limits. Omicron infectivity period doesn’t appear shorter than other COVID variants: Public Health Ontario Ford said restrictions brought in this month to blunt a wave of Omicron infections are working. He noted that his government’s plan involves reopening cautiously, with 50 per cent capacity limits in place at first, and said the province needs to learn to live with the virus to get back to normal.“There’s no one in this province who wants to open up quicker than I do,” Ford told PTBO Today Radio.

New COVID variant BA.2: What's known about 'stealth' omicron?
omicron variant that has been found in more than 50 countries, including the United States. This version of the coronavirus, which scientists call BA.2, is widely considered stealthier than the original version of omicron because particular genetic traits make it somewhat harder to detect. Danish scientists reported this week that preliminary information suggests it may be 1½ times more contagious than the original variant. But scientists say there’s a lot they still don’t know about it, including whether it causes more severe disease.More than 18,000 genetic sequences of BA.2 have been uploaded to GISAID, a global platform for sharing coronavirus data, according to data collected by Scripps Research labs.
