The monitoring and testing of coronavirus levels is set to return this winter, after being ended earlier in March 2023.These surveys will be a scaled-back version of the initial infection monitoring levels that ran for almost three years, reports Nottinghamshire Live.These surveys were considered the 'gold standard' for keeping track of how rampant the virus was at the time, and since it ended this year, there has been no official estimate of how many people have Covid across Britain.However, a new study is set to begin in November, and will run until March 2024.

This study will see up to 32,000 lateral flow tests being carried out each week, with as many as 200,000 members of the public invited to take part.This will be a smaller number than the original survey, but the results will be a broad representation of the population of the UK as a whole.As well as estimating the prevalence of Covid in the UK, the study will also allow scientists to understand any changes in the rate of infected people being admitted to hospital, and to assess the potential for increased demand on the NHS.The study is being co-ordinated by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), which oversaw the original survey together with Oxford University.Professor Steven Riley, UKHSA director-general of data, analytics and surveillance, said: "The data we collected alongside the ONS during the pandemic provided us with a huge amount of valuable insight, so I am delighted that we are able to work together again to keep policymakers and the wider public informed in the coming months.
