More than 3,500 new cases of coronavirus confirmed in UK in last 24 hours - highest number since mid-May

Covid-19  in the last 24 hours has soared to 3,539. The Government said that as of 9am on Friday, there had been a further 3,539 lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK - a spike from yesterday's figure of 2,919.

It's the highest number of new cases recorded since May 17. Overall, 361,677 cases have been confirmed.Another six coronavirus-related deaths were also recorded in all settings.

Figures now show that 41,614 people have now died.Separate figures published by the UK’s statistics agencies show there have now been 57,400 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.There are currently 863 people in hospital, an increase of 26 on Thursday's numbers, with 78 of those patients on a ventilator.
