Montgomery County DA to take over case of suspect in 2021 hit-and-run rampage from Philadelphia to Trappe

Kareem Welton (Montgomery County District Attorney's Office)  NORRISTOWN, Pa. - Kareem Welton, the man accused of hit-and-run crashes in Manayunk and Collegeville in July 2021, is now facing additional charges, according to Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin R.

Steele. On Tuesday, Steele's office announced additional charges against Welton, 41, including, first-degree murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault, robbery, robbery of a motor vehicle, attempted robbery of a motor vehicle, accidents involving death or injury and related charges.

Authorities say Welton went on a "spree of criminal behavior" that took place in the overnight hours between July 27 and July 28 and stretched from Center City to Trappe, Pa.

where he was arrested by police. "Because it was the same criminal episode, the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office has agreed to allow Montgomery County to charge and prosecute all of the criminal behavior committed by the defendant in its jurisdiction," Steele said. "This defendant's behavior that night involved numerous crimes, from stealing a dog and stealing multiple cars to killing someone and robbing her of her chef’s coat, to intentionally targeting other individuals with his vehicle.

(Polizia Roma Capitale via Storyful)Italian police were able to determine the car was a rental and managed to identify the driver as a 37-year-old man from Saudi Arabia. The driver was detained after he dropped off the rental car at Milan’s Malpensa Airport. The man had allegedly told authorities that he had gotten confused by his navigation system which led him to take the wrong turn onto the iconic staircase, according to local news media. A complaint has been filed against the man which includes aggravated damage to cultural and monumental assets, according to Italian police. The Spanish Steps were built at the beginning of the 18th century and connect the Piazza di Spagna (Square of Spain) to the Church of Trinità dei Monti. There are 135 steps that make up the staircase and are a popular tourist attraction.
