HADDON, N.J. - An amateur performance of School of Rock sparked some controversy at two New Jersey elementary schools after teachers made their students leave the theater due to coarse language. Over 150 fifth grade and third grade students, and accompanying staff and chaperons, from Hartford Upper Elementary School and Kellman Brown Academy left a midday performance at the Ritz Theater in Haddon Township.Kelly Hill chaperoned the field trip for her fifth grade daughter, and said while there was some language that may have been inappropriate, she was caught off-guard by the teachers decision. "I really didn't understand what was going on, I just saw one of the teachers get the kids in the front row and have them all stand up and walk out," Hill said. MORE LOCAL HEADLINES"It was enough where I thought to myself like ‘the school is going to get some phone calls later' but I didn't think we would leave because of it."The Ritz Theater Company claims it spoke with both schools before the Wednesday performance and explained that the show contains occasional strong language. Authorities say Norelis Mendoza, 32, of Lindenwold, was found dead on the side of Route 440 near the Jersey City border. JERSEY CITY, N.J. - A New Jersey man is being charged in the murder of a missing Camden County woman whose body was found on the side of a highway near Jersey City. The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office announced several charges against 35-year-old Gregory Mallard in the death of missing Lindenwold woman 32-year-old Norelis Mendoza. The murder, according to prosecutors, is being investigated as an act of domestic violence. Mendoza was reported missing Sunday after she was last seen in Jersey City the previous day.

PHILADELPHIA - A Philadelphia music teacher is keeping her students on beat, despite losing all of her instruments in devastating fire that gutted the entire school building.The Mother of Consolation Parish School in Chestnut Hill went up in flames on Mar. 12, and took with it Elise Malizia's 30-year collection of instruments, CDs and music books. "I lost everything in my classroom – everything," Maliia told FOX 29's Joyce Evans. Despite the loss, she continued to help her students get ready for their spring concert at a chapel on the campus of Chestnut Hill College. "It's such a beautiful thing to be in music education and see the growth and development still happening after a fire, and happening so beautifully," Malizia said. Two months after the fire, there is still no timetable for when the school will be rebuilt.

PHILADELPHIA - Authorities in Philadelphia are trying to identify a masked man who they believe was involved in a shooting at a parking lot ATM. The Philadelphia Police Department on Friday shared pictures of the masked suspect, dressed entirely in black with gray sneakers. Authorities believe the unidentified suspect is white or Hispanic and may have a tattoo on his left hand, according to the surveillance pictures. Police were called to the Roosevelt Plaza Shopping Center on 6500 Roosevelt Boulevard Wednesday night for reports of a shooting. Officer from the Philadelphia Police Department found a 53-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wounds to the chest and leg lying next to his car. The victim, who has not been publicly identified, was taken to Jefferson-Torresdale Hospital where he was admitted in critical condition. Investigators say Wednesday night's shooting was the third violent incident that happened at the ATM.MORE LOCAL HEADLINESHours before the shooting, police responded to the shopping center parking lot after a man who was using the ATM was carjacked at gunpoint by someone who got out of a suspected stolen car.Police say last Friday a 20-year-old man who was using the ATM to deposit a check to use for rent was assaulted, robbed and carjacked by two men in ski masks. Investigators suspect all three incidents may have been carried out by the same person or group, but they have not been able to confirm that theory.

Canadian tourist has been shot and killed in a Mexican beach town just days after a tourist from Argentina was hacked to death in a machete attack in the same Pacific coast resort area.Prosecutors in the Mexican state of Oaxaca say the Canadian man was found dead in a car with a bullet wound in the town of Puerto Escondido, a relaxed beach town popular with surfers, on Monday. No details were revealed regarding the specific circumstances of the man’s death, but he was identified as 27-year-old Víctor Masson.Masson’s death comes three days after a tourist from Argentina was killed in a machete attack in the state of Oaxaca, generally considered one of the safer states in Mexico, roughly 60 miles west of Puerto Escondido in the hamlet of La Isla.The Argentine was identified as Benjamin Gamond and Mexican police say he was one of three tourists from Argentina attacked by a man wielding a machete on Friday and that he died in the hospital after the attack. PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia police are searching for two suspects wanted in an armed robbery at a North Philadelphia store. It happened early Wednesday morning, at 2:25 a.m. inside a business on the 8200 block of West Venango Street.Police have released surveillance video of the incident that begins with one of the suspects repeatedly hitting a security door with an axe.

NORTH WILDWOOD, N.J. - New Jersey environmental officials will allow a shore town to carry out emergency repairs to its badly eroded beachfront, even as they continue a years-long fight with city officials over how best to protect the popular Jersey Shore resort's fragile coastline.On Wednesday, the state Department of Environmental Protection told North Wildwood it could reshape three blocks worth of dunes and repair public access points to a condition that they can be safely used in time for the approaching Memorial Day holiday weekend.The move marked a turning point in a long-running dispute between the city and the state over how to ensure that the beach is wide enough for recreation and to ensure that dunes are sturdy enough to protect the city from coastal storms.North Wildwood and its surrounding coastal neighbors have not received the periodic beach replenishment projects that most of the rest of the Jersey Shore has been getting for decades, due in part to the difficulty of getting approval from property owners.As a result, it has experienced serious erosion over the last decade, and says it needs to take immediate emergency steps including shoring up dunes and building another steel sea wall to complement one it already built.The state has repeatedly denied permission for such work, saying it could actually worsen erosion due to the scouring effect of waves carrying sand along hard barriers like sea walls. It says the city should continue to rely on trucking in sand from mainland quarries.

PHILADELPHIA - A man has died after Philadelphia police say he was shot in the city’s Tioga neighborhood early Friday morning.Police responded to the 3700 block of Germantown Avenue around 2:30 a.m. for a call of a fight and a person with a gun. When officers arrived on the scene they found a man laying on the sidewalk suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.

PHILADELPHIA - Authorities say a food delivery driver was gunned down while sitting inside his car after dropping off food to a property near Temple's North Philadelphia campus. Officers from the Philadelphia Police Department were called to the 1700 block of North Gratz Street for reports of multiple gunshot. Police found a 48-year-old man in the driver's seat of a white Honda suffering from a gunshot wound to the stomach.

CHESTER, Pa. - The City of Chester, a beleaguered suburb of Philadelphia, will have a new mayor in January after a member of city council ousted their longtime mayor. Stefan Root, a 62-year-old Councilmember and electrical engineer, defeated two-term Mayor Thaddeus Kirkland by thousands of votes in the city's recent election. If he beats an independent challenger in the fall, Root will take the reins of the bankrupt city that's finances are currently controlled by a state-appointed receiver with a $45M hole in its pension. "Most of my work is going to be in city hall, straightening up city hall trying to turn it back into a business because it’s a $65M operation not a corner store operation.," Root told FOX 29's Jeff Cole. When manufacturing vanished in Chester the city faded. Some of its 33k residents struggle with poverty on streets marred by broken down homes.  Roots said he wants to work with the state Receiver to fix the city’s deep financial problems.

LEVITTOWN, Pa. - A somber celebration was held Thursday to recognize the completion of a sidewalk project that was spearheaded by a Pennsylvania mother whose son was fatally struck by a car over a decade ago. John Rearick was killed in July 2012 while walking along a stretch of New Falls Road in Levittown. No sidewalk and overgrown trees forced John to walk in the median where he was hit from behind. Since John's death, his heartbroken mother Sharon Rearick has spent tireless hours culling support for a sidewalk project, so people can safely walk next to traffic on New Falls Road. "To make it okay in my brain and my heart, I had to do something," Sharon said.

CRANSTON, R.I. - A Rhode Island city council member and former chair of the local Republican Party is facing calls to resign after he was found sleeping in his car with a crack pipe in hand.According to local reports, a passerby in Cranston, Rhode Island, saw a man possibly choking in his car Monday and alerted an officer nearby. When police arrived, "he appeared to be sleeping or unconscious while having difficulty breathing/choking," arrest reports state.The responding officer had to shake the man to wake him up, then noticed a glass pipe and a lighter in his hand.

PHILADELPHIA - A parking lot ATM outside a shopping center near one of Philadelphia's busiest roadways has become the site of a recent stretch of violent crimes that may have been carried out by the same group.The Bank of America ATM tucked in the corner of Roosevelt Plaza Shopping Center is where police say a 53-year-old man was shot twice Wednesday night while using the machine. Police found the victim - who has not been pubically identified - laying next to his car and rushed him to Jefferson-Torresdale Hospital where he was admitted in critical condition. Investigators believe the man, who police say lives nearby the shopping center, was trying to use the ATM when someone shot him. PHILADELPHIA - The brother of an inmate who escaped a Philadelphia correction facility with another prisoner and was arrested after a 10-day manhunt posted bail after being charged as an accomplice. Court documents show 24-year-old Amir Woods paid the required 10% of a $1M bail set after he was charged with Criminal Conspiracy, Hindering Apprehension, and Escape. Woods was taken into custody on Wednesday when he and fugitive Ameen Hurst, 18, were seen getting into a vehicle after leaving a property in Southwest Philadelphia. According to a criminal complaint obtained by FOX 29's Kelly Rule, it's alleged that Woods helped Hurst arrange for transportation during his time away from prison. RELATED COVERAGEAuthorities believe that during Hurst's escape he traveled to New York before returning to Philadelphia where agents who were trying to negotiate his surrender brought him into custody.U.S. Marshals say Hurst was arrested after missing three deadlines - one at midnight and two more early Wednesday morning - which were brokered his family members over the last few days.Agents camped outside a property in Southwest Philadelphia Wednesday morning and closed in on Hurst and Woods as they were seen leaving a home and getting into a car. Marshals swarmed the vehicle and pulled out both men.

Portraits, signed and dated by Rembrandt in 1635, are going up for auction at Christies in London The last known pair of privately owned Rembrandt portraits have resurfaced after nearly 200 years in hiding.Christie’s in London says the portraits, signed and dated by Rembrandt in 1635, were of the famed painter’s relatives and remained in the family until 1760. They were sold and passed on to various private art collections until 1824, when an ancestor of the current owners bought them at a Christie’s auction.The portraits have remained in that private collection for nearly 200 years, "completely unknown to scholars." MAPLE SHADE, N.J. - A second child has tragically passed away days after a fire at a Maple Shade apartment complex claimed the life of their sibling.Hope Marles, 7, succumbed to her injuries sustained in the May 7 fire at the Fox Meadow Apartment Complex. The same fire also claimed the life of her older brother, 12-year-old Alan John Marles. Their mother remains in the hospital and is in stable condition. Fire crews responded to the complex on the unit block of Adams Drive around 10:30 p.m.

MORE HEADLINES: The victim was shot four times in the left leg and taken to the hospital in critical condition. No injuries to the child were reported. The suspect has been described as a male with a full beard and medium build, wearing a baseball cap and gray hoodie. Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to contact police.

FRANCONIA TOWNSHIP, Pa. - A teenage driver has died after their car slammed into a home in Montgomery County late Wednesday night. Police responded to the 200 block of Allentown Road in Franconia Township just before 11 p.m. for a report of a crash.When officers arrived on scene they found a 2016 BMW sedan had veered off the road and crashed into a nearby home. The car had become fully engulfed in flames.

PHILADELPHIA - Authorities have announced an arrest in an incident outside a Philadelphia speakeasy that left three people with serious injuries last year.Joel Martinez, 22, was arrested in connection with the incident that occurred back on June 12, 2022, near Rosehill and East Westmoreland streets.Martinez is accused of shooting a young woman and a teenage girl while also pistol-whipping a trans woman. Police say the victims were leaving the nightclub when they encountered another group of people, including Martinez. At that time, Martinez allegedly uttered a derogatory word at one of the victims and an argument ensued. During the argument, police say Martinez pulled out a handgun and fire at least six shots, striking two of the victims.
