PORTLAND, Maine – Maine's baby eel fishermen are hopeful for a more stable season in 2021 as they seek one of the most valuable natural resources in New England.

The fishermen seek the eels, called elvers, so they can be sold as seedstock to Asian aquaculture companies. They are then raised to maturity and sold as food, such as sushi.

Maine has the only significant fishery for the eels in the U.S., and they sometimes fetch more than $2,000 per pound. The season starts Monday, just over a year after the coronavirus pandemic upended the 2020 season.

Prices for the eels plummeted last year because of disruption to the worldwide economy caused by the early stages of the pandemic.

LOS ANGELES - The largest asteroid to pass by our planet in 2021 will be at its closest on Sunday, providing astronomers a rare chance to see the giant rock that formed at the dawn of our solar system.According to a statement by NASA, the near-Earth asteroid, called 2001 FO32, will make its closest approach at a distance of about 1.25 million miles — equivalent to 5 1/4 times the distance from Earth of the moon.Discovered in 2001, FO32 will pass by at about 77,000 mph, which is faster than the speed at which most asteroids encounter Earth, NASA said."The reason for the asteroid’s unusually speedy close approach is its highly inclined and elongated (or eccentric) orbit around the Sun, an orbit that is tilted 39 degrees to Earth’s orbital

PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia Eagles' Autism Challenge has been postponed as the city continues to combat the spread of the coronavirus, the team announced on Friday. The annual fundraising event held near Lincoln Financial Field was scheduled for May 22. A new date has not been announced, but organizers said they hope to reschedule sometime in 2021. "We look forward to coming together again as a community and celebrating yet another transformational day for individuals and families affected by autism," Executive Director of the Eagles Autism Foundation Ryan Hammond said.The Eagles Autism Challenge includes a 5k run/walk, a sensory walk and three different bike tours that go up to 50 miles.
