A blood oxygen level below 92% and fast, shallow breathing were associated with significantly elevated death rates in a study of hospitalized COVID-19 patients, suggesting that people who test positive for the virus should watch for these signs at home, according to a study led by University of Washington at Seattle researchers.The study, published today in Influenza and Other Respiratory Viruses, involved a chart review of 1,095 adult coronavirus patients hospitalized at University of Washington hospitals or Rush University Medical Center in Chicago from Mar 1 to Jun 8, 2020.Almost all patients with low oxygen levels (99%) and rapid breathing (98%) were given supplemental oxygen and glucocorticoids to quell inflammation.Few cases of

Ontario reports 870 new COVID-19 cases, 4th straight day cases are below 1K
COVID-19 cases on Thursday, as case counts continue to trend downward marking the fourth day in a row it’s below 1,000 again. The provincial total now stands at 533,761.On Wednesday, 733 new cases were recorded, 699 on Tuesday and 916 on Monday.According to Thursday’s report, 225 cases were recorded in Toronto, 167 in Peel Region, 55 in Niagara, 49 in Porcupine Health Unit, 45 in Hamilton, 44 in Durham Region and 43 in Ottawa.York Region, typically in the higher end of the provincial case count, only recorded 28 new cases.All other local public health units reported fewer than 40 new cases in the provincial report.The death toll in the province has risen to 8,801 as 10 more deaths were recorded.

COVID-19 — Montreal and its northern suburb Laval, Que., — have among the lowest vaccination rates in the province, according to data from Quebec’s public health institute.Experts say those lower rates aren’t surprising: vaccine hesitancy, low trust in government and negative experiences with the health system are all factors that help explain why people in some communities haven’t been as eager as others to get a shot.“It makes sense that we see under-vaccination in these places,” said Laurence Monnais, a medical historian at Université de Montréal who has studied vaccine hesitancy.Only four of the province’s 18 regions have vaccination rates below 60 per cent, according to recent data by Institut national de santé publique du Québec.
