Smoke from Canada wildfire impacting air quality in Delaware Valley, forecasters say

PHILADELPHIA - Smoke from a wildfire more than 600 miles away is impacting the Delaware Valley, bringing hazy conditions to the area. In Halifax, Nova Scotia, evacuations are underway as tens of thousands of homes are threatened by a burning wildfire. Several homes in the area have already been burned, officials say. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau addressed the wildfires in a tweet, calling the situation "incredibly serious." Despite being hundreds of miles away, smoke from the burning wildfires is impacting the Delaware Valley. In Chester County, the West Chester Fire Department is warning about hazy smoke and a burning odor in the air. Officials say there is no immediate threat to the area. FOX 29's Sue Serio says clockwise circulation around a low-pressure system is causing the winds to blow in the direction of the Philadelphia area. More smoke is expected to impact areas from New York down to Washington D.C., on Wednesday, according to Serio. Federal agents bust two large scale-drug rings in Delaware

WILMINGTON, De. - Prosecutors in Delaware announced they dismantled two large-scale drug rings that plagued to local communities. United States Attorney David Weiss and federal agents from the FBI and DEA met with the media on Thursday to discuss the operations that peddled narcotics, including fentanyl and methamphetamine in communities in Dover and Rosemont. PHILADELPHIA - Authorities are searching for a hit-and-run driver who they say is accused of three crashes on the same night in Philadelphia, including one that claimed the life of a young man. Neera Nicolas-Hudson, 32, is alleged to have been behind the wheel of a 2005 Ford Mustang on Dec. 26 when she struck a man riding a scooter on the 100 block of North Delaware Avenue.Nicolas-Hudson fled the scene of the crash, according to police, and hit a bicyclist near the intersection of Broad and Spring Garden streets. Thousands impacted by accidental water main break in Delaware County, officials say

CONCORD TWP, Pa. - Thousands of Delaware County water customers were told to boil their water until further notice after a water main was accidentally ruptured by a construction company Tuesday afternoon. A spokesperson for Veolia Water Company said a contractor that isn't associated with the company accidentally struck a water main on Naamans Creek Road near Route 202. The break initially impacted water service for approximately 2,100 customers, according to the company, but that number was quickly whittled down to just 200. "The process of sampling water, taking it to a lab for testing, could take several days for drinking water to be safe again," a spokesperson said. The rupture caused traffic back-ups and detours on surrounding roadways.

Police: 2 teens accused of Wilmington carjacking arrested in Pennsylvania

CHESTER, Pa. - Two teenagers are facing charges after police say they carjacked someone in Delaware and sped away from officers during an attempted traffic stop before being arrested in Pennsylvania. Officers from the Wilmington Police Department were called to the 600 block of Geddes Street around 7 p.m. Tuesday for reports of a carjacking, according to investigators. Police located the stolen vehicle a short time later, but it sped away from officers when they tried to conduct a vehicle stop. The car was recovered later that night in Chester, Pennsylvania – about a 20-minute drive from Wilmington. Police say a 14-year-old and 17-year-old were both taken into custody after first trying to run away from City of Chester police officers. Both teens are being charged with first-degree robbery, among other charges, according to authorities.

Reed Messer, 42, was extradited back to Delaware to face sexual abuse and rape charges. WILMINGTON, Del. - A former educator has been sent back to Delaware after being charged with rape for a sexual relationship with a former student, Delaware State Police say. According to authorities, 42-year-old Reed Messer became the subject of an investigation in December 2022 when State Police received a report from the Delaware Division of Family Services alleging the former teacher had a sexual relationship with a juvenile student at Stanton Middle School in Wilmington nearly a decade prior. Troopers say an investigation revealed Messer had sexual relations with the student in a relationship that began in October 2014 and lasted for about two months. MORE LOCAL HEADLINESOn April 26, troopers obtained an arrest warrant for Messer, who moved to South Carolina, authorities say. Law enforcement in South Carolina found Messer at her residence and took her into custody, according to officials. State Police say Messer was extradited back to Delaware on Monday and charged with sexual abuse of a child and rape.

Woman carjacked in New Castle County gym parking lot during middle of the day, authorities say

NEWARK, Del. - The Delaware State Police are investigating a carjacking that they say took place in a gym parking lot in New Castle County Sunday afternoon. Just before 3 p.m., police say a 31-year-old woman was carjacked as she was parking her Dodge Durango in the Edge Fitness parking lot located at 2800 Fashion Center Boulevard in Newark. Authorities say as the victim exited her vehicle with her car keys in hand, an unknown suspect approached her and attempted to grab her keys. After a physical struggle, police say the suspect was able to gain control of the keys after shoving the victim to the ground. The first suspect then entered the driver's seat of the Durango before a second suspect entered the front passenger seat.

As the officer was traveling toward the intersection of W Franklin Avenue, a pedestrian walked into the road from the grass median in the center of the highway, getting struck by the officer's vehicle, police say.

Officials: Delaware man arrested, charged with 9th DUI

(Delaware State Police)DOVER, Del. - A Delaware man was arrested Saturday on a 9th DUI charge in Dover.Officials with Delaware State Police say 44-year-old Christopher Harris, of Cheswold, was seen by a trooper in a pickup truck heading north on South Dupont Highway Saturday afternoon, around 4:15.The trooper observed Harris at the wheel swerving on the road, cross into the other lane and change lanes without using a turn signal multiple times.The trooper pulled Harris over and smelled alcohol on Harris’ breath.
