Woman, 22, killed in hit-and-run by suspected drunk driver she refused to ride with earlier, authorities say

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - A 22-year-old woman in upstate New York was killed in a hit-and-run by an alleged drunk driver, who she had previously refused to ride with, according to authorities. Madison Faltisco, 22, was walking along Route 57 in the town of Clay, a suburb of Syracuse, on the evening of June 8 when she was struck and killed by a vehicle, allegedly driven by a 23-year-old Joshua Schiano, according to Onondaga County Sheriff’s spokesperson Thomas Newton.Schiano has been charged with second-degree manslaughter, second-degree vehicular manslaughter, and leaving the scene of a fatal accident, court records show. The grim details of the case unfolded hours after Faltisco was struck. Faltisco and Schiano were co-workers at Smokey Bone's in Clay, according to Newton. Smoke from Canada wildfire impacting air quality in Delaware Valley, forecasters say

PHILADELPHIA - Smoke from a wildfire more than 600 miles away is impacting the Delaware Valley, bringing hazy conditions to the area. In Halifax, Nova Scotia, evacuations are underway as tens of thousands of homes are threatened by a burning wildfire. Several homes in the area have already been burned, officials say. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau addressed the wildfires in a tweet, calling the situation "incredibly serious." Despite being hundreds of miles away, smoke from the burning wildfires is impacting the Delaware Valley. In Chester County, the West Chester Fire Department is warning about hazy smoke and a burning odor in the air. Officials say there is no immediate threat to the area. FOX 29's Sue Serio says clockwise circulation around a low-pressure system is causing the winds to blow in the direction of the Philadelphia area. More smoke is expected to impact areas from New York down to Washington D.C., on Wednesday, according to Serio. Lawmakers in Michigan are considering a bill to make it illegal to declaw cats, which many animal advocates and some veterinarians say impedes the felines' natural instincts to climb and scratch.House Bill 4674 would amend the state's Public Health Code to regulate certain surgical procedures performed on cats like the act of declawing. The legislation bans "an onychectomy, a partial or complete phalangectomy, or tendonectomy procedure, or any other surgical procedure that prevents normal 4 functioning of the claws, toes, or paws, on a cat." Declawing involves amputating the last bone on each of the feline's toe."If you look at your fingers, declawing would be like amputating the last section of each finger," veterinarian Louise Murray told animal rights organization, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). "If you were declawed, you would have 10 little short fingers.
