Colorado county mistakenly sends $238K to hackers after cyberattack

BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. - County leaders in Colorado said they mistakenly sent $238,000 to hackers after one of its vendors experienced a cyberattack. Boulder County said on its website that after its vendor was hacked, a spearfishing e-mail was sent to the county. Thinking it was the vendor itself, the county sent the check. However, it turned out the money was sent to a fraudulent account. Retirement accounts have become a popular target for cybercriminals looking to cash out."Although the county has safeguards in place to prevent these types of frauds from occurring, and we successfully thwart attacks by fraudsters several times a year, we did not catch this one in time to prevent the check from being cashed," County Administrator Jana Petersen said on the county’s website.

FILE - Scientists with NASA’s New Horizons mission have assembled this highest-resolution color view of one of two potential cryovolcanoes spotted on the surface of Pluto by the New Horizons spacecraft in July 2015. After years of research, scientists now hypothesize that giant dome-like formations that were first photographed by NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft in 2015 were recently active icy volcanoes, also known as cryovolcanoes. Scientists guessed these cryovolcanoes expelled "slushy" ice water as opposed to molten lava. These formations could indicate that the interior of the giant space rock was warmer than previously thought, according to a study published in the journal Nature Communications on March 29. Researchers believe there may be an insulating layer under Pluto’s surface, kind of like the insulation in a coffee mug that keeps the liquid hot - the same principle applies to Pluto. This built-up heat within Pluto could be how these icy volcanoes produced viscous material and spewed out icy water or slush, Kelsi Singer, senior research scientist at the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado and lead author of the study, told FOX TV Stations. This recent theory allows scientists to view Pluto as a far more reactive space body than previously believed. "This area is by far the most numerous and the largest icy volcanoes found so far in the solar system," Singer said. "Besides just being a fun fact, this means that Pluto had to have more heat in its interior than we expected.

Colorado supermarket shooting on Monday has been charged with 10 counts of first-degree murder, according to local authorities on Tuesday.Ten people, including a police officer, were killed Monday afternoon when a gunman opened fire in a Boulder, Colo., grocery store.

BOULDER, Colo. - A procession was held Monday evening to honor a fallen police officer who was killed as he responded to a mass shooting at a crowded supermarket in Colorado.The slain officer was identified as Eric Talley, 51, who had been with Boulder police since 2010. Nine other people were killed in the shooting in southern Boulder, whose identities were not disclosed as police were still notifying their family members.Dozens of police and emergency vehicles, their lights flashing, escorted an ambulance carrying the officer from the shooting scene to a funeral home after nightfall.
