Relatives charged after 3-year-old died at San Jose church exorcism

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Three people have now been arrested and charged following the death of a 3-year-old girl at a church exorcism in San Jose.San Jose police on Friday identified the girl's uncle Rene Aaron Hernandez-Santos, 19, and her grandfather, Rene Trigueros Hernandez, 59, as the newest suspects to be arrested on suspicion of felony child abuse. They were arrested on Wednesday. The girl's mother, Claudia Hernandez-Santos, 25, had already been charged with felony child abuse following her daughter's death in the 1000 block of South 2nd Street, which is a makeshift Pentecostal church called Iglesia Apostoles y Profetas.

The elder Hernandez is also pastor of the church. The girl – Arely Naomi Proctor – died on Sept. 24, 2021, as the family was trying to rid her of evil spirits, according to court documents filed against the mother. As for why it took so long to charge the uncle and the grandfather? San Jose police spokesman Steven Aponte said the coroner's report, determining the girl died by asphyxiation, was released only recently and "implicated the two individuals that were arrested just two days ago." A spotlight has recently been focused on this basement church, as a parishioner there has been charged in a separate kidnapping case of a baby boy. In the case of the 3-year-old girl, officers were called out to the church and found her unresponsive on the floor.

First responders tried to revive her, but she was pronounced dead at the hospital. Efforts to determine if any of the family members had attorneys were not immediately available on Friday. The mother had previously denied a request for an interview. Pentecostal church called Iglesia Apostoles y Profetas in San JoseCharging documents filed against the mother

San Jose last fall is receiving renewed interest after church leaders in the community said that they performed an exorcism on the child. The body of Arely Naomi Proctor was found in the basement of a San Jose church last September and her death was ruled a homicide caused by asphyxiation by the Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office. Her mother, Claudia Hernandez, has been charged with assault on a child resulting in death. Parents under investigation after letting 6-year-old son run full marathon Officials at the Iglesia Apostoles y Profetas church, where Proctor died, told the San Jose Mercury News that they performed a ceremony on the toddler to “liberate her of her evil spirits,” and that her death was “the will of God,” and not related to the exorcism.Court documents obtained by KRON found that the family “believed the child was possessed by a demon and were at the church praying for her,” according to deputy district attorney Rebekah Wise.Authorities say that Hernandez withheld food from her daughter and squeezed her neck.

Opening statements in trial of Elizabeth Holmes' ex-boyfriend, Theranos COO Sunny Balwani
SAN JOSE, Calif. - Opening statements were set to begin Tuesday in the federal fraud trial of former Theranos Chief Operating Officer and ex-boyfriend of the company's founder, Elizabeth Holmes.Sunny Balwani faces 10 counts of fraud and two counts of conspiracy related to his role in the failed blood testing company. Holmes faced the same charges and was convicted in January of three counts of fraud and one count of conspiracy. Her sentencing is scheduled for September after Balwani's trial is complete. While Holmes was the public face of the company that falsely claimed its technology could run a complex array of tests with only a drop of blood, Balwani managed many of the company's day-to-day operations. He oversaw the testing lab and prosecutors say he was instrumental in the decision to secretly use modified third-party analyzers after the company's so-called Edison analyzers proved to be plagued with problems. The ex-lovers were indicted together, but their trials were separated after Holmes' defense team accused Balwani of abusing her and controlling her decisions at the company.Balwani's attorney's have denied he abused Holmes. His trial was set to begin in February but was pushed back as the Omicron variant of the coronavirus surged. Opening statements were again delayed last week when Judge Edward Davila said a juror was exposed to someone with the virus. AdvertisementEvan Sernoffsky is an investigative reporter for KTVU.

COVID exposure cancels Theranos exec Sunny Balwani opening statements
SAN JOSE, Calif. - Less than an hour after Theranos executive Sunny Balwani walked into a San Jose federal courthouse on Wednesday, a judge canceled opening statements because someone on the jury was exposed to someone with COVID.The judge called it a "limited, limited exposure" and said he hoped to be back in session "sooner rather than later."It wasn't exactly clear, but it appeared as though the case might resume on Friday. Balwani is Theranos founder's Elizabeth Holmes ex-boyfriend and was second-in-command at the now disgraced blood-testing Silicon Valley company. Like Holmes, Balwani faces multiple fraud charges as a co-conspirator in misleading investors and patients. Prosecutors say Balwaini and Holmes falsely told investors that the company's proprietary technology could perform a wide range of blood tests using only a drop of blood and also grossly exaggerated Theranos's financial standing and profitability.Prosecutors aren't saying whether they will call Holmes to testify against balwani.During her trial, Holmes testified that Balwani sexually and psychologically abused her and controlled her life.In January, a jury found Holmes guilty of fraud and conspiracy. Her sentencing has been delayed until September. The Theranos saga captivated much of the country and is now also the subject of a Hulu series called 'The Dropout. Advertisement
