BURLINGTON, N.J. - Lightning strikes from a pair of June thunderstorms are being blamed for sparking two forest fires in Burlington County, officials announced Tuesday. The New Jersey Forest Fire Service said the extremely rare phenomenon started the Acorn Hill wildfire in the Woodland Township area on June 16, and the Flatiron forest fire in Medford on June 3. While both wildfires were started by lightning strikes, fire investigators say the spread in different ways. Each wildfire consumed over 200 acres of woodland.Investigators found the Acorn Hill wildfire started through what's known as a "holdover fire" where a fire burns inside a lightning-struck tree for several days before it ignites other vegetation.

BURLINGTON COUNTY, N.J. - A major wildfire raged through a forest in Burlington County, threatening nearby homes and prompted a large response from local emergency crews Saturday morning.Officials announced Saturday evening the Flatiron Wildfire was 100 percent contained, of a 210 acre blaze in the Pinelands Forest near Elderberry Drive and Jackson Road in Medford.Officials say 40 homes were at risk when crews responded shortly after midnight.The fire was successfully moved away from the homes thanks to backfiring operations, which were conducted in the backyard as residents sheltered inside, according to authorities.MORE HEADLINES:Flames from the fire spread through what officials called a very dense and "explosive" area of the Pine Barrens during a press conference Saturday morning."I've been the warden here for over 40 years, and it's an area it's always been of concern," said Incident Commander Tom Gerber.This wildfire is about 40 miles away from the Allen Road Fire that erupted just days ago in Tuckerton, and has torched thousands of acres.

MEDFORD, N.J. - A dispute over a beloved mural on the exterior wall of a New Jersey sweets shop has the community rallying around a small business owner. Candy Thibeau, owner of Maggie Moose Bakery in Medford, said she received a letter from the township on Monday that claimed the mural violates local sign codes due to its artwork. The bright pink wall adorned with sprinkles and the shop's moose mascot is considered a sign, not artwork, according to the township officials.Thibeau was given two choices to rectify the mural in order to bring it up to the township's standards, including one option that involves painting over the moose mascot.MORE LOCAL HEADLINES"Medford is saying the pink wall is fine, and the sprinkles are fine to leave up," Thibeau told FOX 29's Hank Flynn. "Our mascot is part of our signage, they consider it part of our signage because it's in our logo."Thibeau could hire a lawyer and spend money on legal fees for the possibility of a variance, but she believes everyone's time and energy is best spent on something more meaningful than a playful drawing of a cartoon moose. MEDFORD, N.J. - A 70-year-old man is hospitalized and making a recovery after he was rescued from a house fire in Medford.The fire occurred on Monday at approximately 1:20 p.m. when emergency services were called to a house on Hastings Avenue. When police arrived, neighbors were able to relay information about the 70-year-old resident still being inside the home, which prompted a quick rescue. Bicyclist fatally struck by vehicle in Burlington County

MEDFORD, N.J. - Authorities say a bicyclist was struck and killed by a vehicle late Saturday night in a Burlington County neighborhood. According to Medford Township Police, the fatal accident happened on Branin Road shortly after 10 p.m.Officers say the victim was struck by a vehicle traveling northbound on Branin Road.
