WASHINGTON - A recent report from researchers at the University of Massachusetts-Boston found that rising inflation has made it difficult for millions of elderly Americans to afford basic needs. The report published in the university’s Elder Index states that half of older women as well as 45% of older men who live alone are classified as living under federal poverty standards.The index accounts for health care, food, housing and transportation costs. In 2020, the index found that 2 million senior couples were considered "financially insecure" based on their incomes compared with the cost of living. Despite these alarming findings, the cost of living isn’t going down.Inflation surged in June and workers' average wages accelerated in the spring — signs that Americans won't likely feel any relief from rising prices anytime soon and that the Federal Reserve will feel compelled to raise borrowing costs further.An inflation gauge closely tracked by the Fed jumped 6.8% in June from a year ago, the government said Friday, the biggest such jump in four decades. Much of the increase was driven by energy and food.On a month-to-month basis, too, prices surged 1% in June, the biggest such rise since 2005.

FOX NEWS - A massive great white shark stalking the East Coast was spotted near the Carolinas on Monday after earlier being tracked off the coast of New Jersey, according to researchers.Ironbound, the 12-foot, 4-inch shark weighing nearly 1,000 pounds, made headlines after migrating from the Carolinas up the coast to New Jersey late last month.As of Monday, it appears the great white returned to the Carolinas, according to OCEARCH shark researchers who keep track of sharks’ migratory patterns via a tag tracking system.Researchers believe a white shark mating site is located off the Carolinas, the Boston Herald reported.OCEARCH Chief Scientist Robert Hueter told the outlet last week that Ironbound may have left the site early ahead of the other sharks, adding that is unclear what sparked the migration.Despite Ironbound’s apparent return to southern waters, New Jersey may not have seen the last of the great white. Hueter said that the sharks will usually start migrating to northern waters in mid-to-late May and arrive in those areas beginning in June.Ironbound is considered the "leader of the pack," according to Hueter, who described the apex predator as "formidable" and "not the prettiest animal."Ironbound was first tagged in October 2019 near Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.

FBI is warning parents that teen boys are increasingly being targeted in online "sextortion" schemes. FBI Boston Division’s Child Exploitation-Human Trafficking Task Force warned parents and caregivers on Wednesday about an increasing number of reports of adults posing as young girls who coerce young boys through social media to produce sexual images and videos and then extort them for money. In the so-called "sextortion" schemes that have recently become more prevalent, adult predators pretending to be young girls contact young males usually between the ages of 14 and 17 online over any platform used to meet and communicate, such as a game, app or social media accounts. They then use "deception and manipulation" to convince the young males to engage in explicit activity over video, which is then secretly recorded by the predator, the FBI says.

The Tenczar family of Kingston, Massachusetts, was awarded nearly $5 million in damages in December 2021 after their home, and mental health, suffered major damages from golf balls flying onto their property from the Indian Pond Country Club nearby, according to court documents. The family originally savored the beautiful views of the 15th fairway that abutted their property and the quiet neighborhood they felt so lucky to join in 2017, but soon golfers began showing up in droves and their once idyllic home turned into what felt like a battlefield, The Boston Globe reported. Windows were shattered, the siding on their home had numerous golf ball-sized dents and the Tenczars were genuinely afraid for their children’s safety. Over the past four years, Erik and Athina Tenczar gathered nearly 700 golf balls that landed on their property, according to The Globe. "When it hits, it sounds like a gunshot," Athina, 36, told The Globe.
