World's COVID-19 death toll nears 6 million
BANGKOK (AP) - The official global death toll from COVID-19 is on the verge of eclipsing 6 million — underscoring that the pandemic, now in its third year, is far from over. The milestone is the latest tragic reminder of the unrelenting nature of the pandemic even as people are shedding masks, travel is resuming and businesses are reopening around the globe. The death toll, compiled by Johns Hopkins University, stood at 5,996,882 as of Sunday morning and was expected to pass the 6 million mark later in the day.Remote Pacific islands, whose isolation had protected them for more than two years, are just now grappling with their first outbreaks and deaths, fueled by the highly contagious omicron variant.Hong Kong, which is seeing deaths soar, is testing its entire population of 7.5 million three times this month as it clings to mainland China’s "zero-COVID" strategy. As death rates remain high in Poland, Hungary, Romania and other Eastern European countries, the region has seen more than 1 million refugees arrive from war-torn Ukraine, a country with poor vaccination coverage and high rates of cases and deaths. And despite its wealth and vaccine availability, the United States is nearing 1 million reported deaths on its own.A nurse checks on a patient in the ICU Covid-19 ward at NEA Baptist Memorial Hospital in Jonesboro, Arkansas, U.S., on Wednesday, Aug.

Valentine’s Day couples told to avoid face to face sex in Thailand due to Covid
Thailand are being warned to avoid certain sex positions on Valentine’s Day as health officials release guidance to stop the spread of Covid.Authorities have suggested couples seeking some action take precautions such as having a test prior to intercourse and even wear a face mask during sex.The guidance has come after a rise in daily Covid cases, prompting fears that Valentine’s Day couplings may add to the spread.Speaking to AFP, Thailand’s Bureau of Reproductive Health director Bunyarit Sukrat said: "Covid isn't a sexually transmitted disease, but catching Covid is possible through close-contact breathing and exchanging saliva.”He brought forward recommendations for couples to take antigen tests before their go on their date night in order to try and prevent the spread.Other advice to stop the spread of Covid was to "avoid face-to-face sex positions and deep kissing", as well as some contraceptive advice being issued to stop unwanted pregnancies.Mr Bunyarit added: “If possible, wearing face masks while having sex can help reduce Covid risks.”Other advisory measures given include using the Covid-19 tracking app to see if the restaurant or other establishment is safe, according to the Bangkok Post.Officials also advised couples to wear masks and maintain social distancing while out on their date and when they return home if they live with others who could be at risk such as elderly and or vulnerable people.
