Delaware County fire company suspended pending investigation into alleged racist comments
DARBY TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Briarcliffe Fire Company has been shut down for at least the next 30 days as Delaware County officials investigate the alleged use of racial slurs on a recent virtual meeting. The fire company, located in Darby Township will not be receiving fire calls during the suspension. The suspension comes after a Jan. 27 virtual meeting between township fire companies and commissioners about a potential consolidation. According to a letter from the Goodwill Fire Company obtained by FOX 29, following the end of the meeting, a group of people remained on the call. The letter says there was then a group of people that could be heard discussing the meeting using foul language, and identifies those involved in the conversation as members of the Briarcliffe Fire Company. The conversation, which lasted an hour and 45 minutes, allegedly included racial slurs when discussing members of other fire companies and township residents. One of the Briarcliffe Fire Company members was also accused of making a joke about, Fanta Bility, a young girl who was killed in a shooting in Sharon Hill last fall.Derogatory and otherwise offensive comments were also allegedly made about other township officials.Township officials say the incident is under investigation, and that a criminal referral is expected to be made to the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office. MORE HEADLINES:In their letter, the Goodwill Fire Company Board of directors expressed their concern for the fire companies and safety of the community. "This is not appropriate and does not belong in the township," the letter read. Darby Township officials are scheduled to speak on the issue at 2 p.m.

Liberal MP tells Trudeau to ‘stop dividing Canadians’ with COVID-19 approach
the COVID-19 pandemic and calling on the federal government to “stop dividing Canadians” and to provide a clear plan for when it will lift vaccine mandates.During a Tuesday morning press conference, Lightbound called for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Liberal government to “stop dividing Canadians.”“I can’t help but notice with regret that both the tone and the policies of my government changed drastically on the eve and during the last election campaign.” Trucker convoy protest ‘has to stop,’ Justin Trudeau says Most recently, Trudeau has been outspoken in condemning the behaviour of a so-called “Freedom Convoy” of protestors that has taken over much of downtown Ottawa.Speaking in a press conference Monday, Trudeau said Canadians have watched the protestors “in disgust and disbelief,” wondering “how this could have happened in our nation’s capital after everything we’ve been through together.”However, his comments have prompted some — including interim Conservative leader Candice Bergen — to accuse him of sowing “division” by “overtly politicizing vaccines and the pandemic” and “calling these Canadians names.”Now, Lightbound is slamming the government for causing what he characterized as worsening divisions among Canadians — and he’s calling on the Liberals to make a number of changes. He said they should provide a “clear and measurable benchmark” for when public health measures will be lifted.

Poilievre can be a ‘strong’ leader but uniting Tories is a challenge: former minister
Conservative MP Pierre Poilievre’s announcement Saturday to run for the party’s leadership and become Canada’s next prime minister is being widely endorsed by fellow Tory members of Parliament.Poilievre, the Tories’ finance critic, is the first candidate to launch his bid for the Conservative Party of Canada’s top spot after MPs forced Erin O’Toole out of the position this past week. The Conservative leadership race has already started Among those who pledged their support to the Ottawa-area MP is John Baird, a former federal Conservative cabinet minister. In an interview with The West Block‘s Mercedes Stephenson Sunday, Baird said Poilievre has the qualities to be a “very strong leader,” but unifying a fractured Conservative Party will be a challenge.“He’s someone who I think will galvanize Conservatives, not just in the parliamentary caucus, but across the country and galvanize Canadians,” said Baird, who served as the minister of foreign affairs from 2011 to 2015 in then-prime minister Stephen Harper’s cabinet. In a three-minute video released on social media Saturday evening, Poilievre didn’t mention the Conservative Party by name or the leadership contest, saying only that he wants the job as prime minister. The race to replace O’Toole, who was ousted by Conservative MPs in a vote on Wednesday, is well underway with thousands of new memberships sold, a source told Global News on Friday.
