Lifeline for thousands of businesses as court rules insurers must pay for Covid damage

Thousands of small businesses will receive insurance payouts covering money lost during the first lockdown, a court has ruled today.

In a landmark win for employers and workers, the Supreme Court ruled in favour of small firms receiving payments from business interruption insurance policies.

And while it's set to cost the insurance industry more than £1.2billion, it means as many as 370,000 small businesses could be given a lifeline to trade beyond the coronavirus crisis.

During the first lockdown last March, many small businesses made claims through business interruption insurance policies for earnings lost when they had to close.
