NORTH WILDWOOD, N.J. - Erosion from a late spring storm will keep some beaches at the Jersey Shore from being ready for visitors on Memorial Day weekend, but overall, the shore came through the winter in good shape.Scientists and local officials at some shore towns say a storm earlier this month caused erosion that won't be able to be repaired in time for Memorial Day weekend crowds, but note that the vast majority of Jersey Shore beaches will be ready for holiday crowds.Shore towns including North Wildwood and Toms River are among spots where at least some of the beaches will not be open in time for the unofficial start of the summer tourism season."Overall the state's beaches are in good condition," said Jon Miller, an expert on coastal engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology. "There were some areas where we knew we would need some more sand."The worst culprit was the so-called "Mother's Day storm" in early May in which the storm lasted for numerous high tide cycles and ate away chunks of beaches on many shore towns.

Even in towns that had wide beaches before the storm, some erosion took place, but some withstood the assault better than others."Critical narrow areas got some dune damage," said Stewart Farrell, director of Stockton University’s Coastal Research Center. "There were no breaches that I know of, but this was the worst event of the winter so far due to the duration of the northeast winds for four high tides at least."Nowhere is the damage from the early May storm more visible than in North Wildwood.

PHILADELPHIA - An off-duty police officer was carjacked at gunpoint early Friday morning and the car was found on fire. Chief Inspector Scott Small says the carjacking happened around 12:15 a.m., officers with the 12th District responded to numerous calls for a carjacking, shots fired and an auto accident at the intersection of 56th and Pentridge Streets in Kingsessing. When police arrived on scene, they found an off-duty officer who said he was parking his Silver 2020 Toyota Highlander when a suspect with a gun stopped him, reached into his pockets to grab his keys and then stole his vehicle, authorities say. According to authorities, on Sunday around 10 p.m., officers with the Toms River Township Police Department were notified that a person was hit by a marked Toms River police vehicle. Police say the incident happened in the area of Fischer Boulevard and Adams Avenue. Officials say the prosecutor's office conducted an investigation and determined 42-year-old William Carberry of Toms River was trying to cross Fischer Boulevard when he was struck by a Toms River Township Police vehicle. Erosion keeping some North Wildwood beaches closed Memorial Day weekend

NORTH WILDWOOD, N.J. - Erosion from an early May storm is keeping some beaches in North Wildwood closed on the eve of the unofficial start of summer. FOX 29's Shaynah Ferreira visited North Wildwood Friday morning as crews continued working onshore. North Wildwood Mayor Patrick Rosenello says out of the town's 30 guarded beaches, about eight or nine of them will not be ready to open Memorial Day weekend. Rosenello also says crews are about two weeks behind schedule due to the nor'easter that moved through the area on Mother's Day. He is also urging people who see sand piles to stay away from them because they could be unstable. Areas between 10th Street and 19th Street have been impacted by the delays, but the mayor recommends visitors go to beaches north or south of those affected areas. Rosenello says North Wildwood is looking forward to summer and the community is ready to welcome visitors back for sand and fun.Advertisement"This is definitely the first normal summer season since 2019," he said.
