A dad-of-two who struggled with substance abuse and his mental health died while on unescorted leave from a mental health unit, an inquest has heard.
Carl Thompson's mother told day one of an inquest into his death the whole tight-knit family are 'heartbroken' at his loss, and have many concerns over his care.
The inquest at Stockport Coroners' Court is being held in front of a jury who heard that Carl was first diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in 2015 and had a history of drug use, leading to him being sectioned under the mental health times several times.
In 2018 he was supported to stop using drugs and his mental health improved for some time. However, in December 2021 he was detained under the mental health act again following a deterioration and the use of cannabis.
