PHILADELPHIA - U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials in Philadelphia recently seized hundreds of slimy bloodsucking leeches that were destined for address in three states.

Officials say a total of about 300 leeches were found in nine plastic jars that arrived in a combined six air cargo shipments from Bulgaria between Feb.

19 and Feb. 25. The shipments were headed to addresses in Connecticut, Florida, and Illinois. (U.S. Customs and Border Protection)Labels on each of the jars identified the slimy critters as Hirudo Orientalis.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife officials identified the species as as Hirudo Medicinalis, a species of leech used in medical bloodletting treatments.After identifying the leeches, officials determined the shipments violated the U.S.

Police: 2 injured after suspect shoots into crowd of pedestrians in North Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA - Two people were injured after a gunman opened fire into a group of people in North Philadelphia, according to authorities. Police say the incident happened early Saturday morning around 1:45 a.m. Officers with the 22nd district responded to a report of a shooting on the 1800 block of W. Diamond Street, according to police. Officers met a group of pedestrians who alerted them that two people were shot, authorities say. According to police, a 19-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man suffered from gunshot wounds. Both say they were standing on the street when a car, possibly orange or red in color, stopped in the street and let out a passenger, authorities say. Police say the victims told investigators the passenger who exited the car had a gun and began firing into the crowd of people standing at the location. The suspect got back into the car before it drove westbound on Diamond Street, according to investigators. Both injured victims were transported to the hospital where the woman, who was shot in the foot, is in stable condition.

PHILADELPHIA - High schools in the Philadelphia school district will start at 9 a.m. this fall as the next wave of changes that officials hope will improve transportation and education. Spokesperson Monica Lewis said the district's plan to phase to a three-tiered bell schedule started last fall, impacting kindergarten through 8th grade. "The American Academy of Pediatrics whim have stated that a later start time for high school students would help them arrive to school more alert and prepared to learn," Lewis said. In a letter to families, the district said the plan also "promotes safer travel in the mornings" since most high school students are responsible for their own commute to school. "This effort improves the overall transportation experience for our students, even as we continue to face a nationwide bus driver shortage," the letter said. PHILADELPHIA - The man accused of stabbing two employees inside the Museum of Modern Art in New York was arrested in Philadelphia on Tuesday. Police were aware that the man, 60-year-old Gary Cabana, could be making his way to Philadelphia after allegedly stabbing two employees at museum on Saturday afternoon. According to police, he started a fire in a room on the fifth floor at the Best Western on Vine Street on Monday night after using the name "Joseph Cabana" to book the room. There was extensive damage to the hotel room, police say. Investigators looked through surveillance video and recognized Cabana from their joint investigation with the police departments in New York and Washington D.C. PHILADELPHIA - Authorities say a teenager was driven to the hospital after he was stabbed during a fight outside a Philadelphia restaurant on Monday. According to police, a 17-year-old was stabbed in the back several times during a fight outside the Golden Gate Restaurant on Rennard Street just after 7 p.m. The teenage victim was driven to Holy Redeemer Hospital by a private vehicle, then transferred to Jefferson-Abington Hospital, police said. He is expected to recover.No arrests were reported immediately after the stabbing.
