Heartbreaking figures show the devastating toll the Covid-19 pandemic has caused in each region in England and Wales. In the North West an average of 332 people have died each week after contracting the virus since the start of the pandemic.
In London that figure is 292, while in the South East it is 283. This morning data published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) confirmed that the UK's death toll had passed 100,000 by January 15.
And the true figure is estimated to be closer to 116,000 after coronavirus fatalities surged in the days since then. The ONS figures, which measure death certificates mentioning Covid-19, showed that 103,704 people with coronavirus had died by the end of 2021's second week.
