breast cancer in April 2018 - on Friday the 13th - and given the incurable news in September 2019. Given the date, I was weirdly expecting the news.

I knew it, somehow. What shocked me was the treatment plan: immediate double mastectomy, then chemotherapy, and then hormone therapy, which prompted menopause.

One minute I was bald and weepy; the next very angry with a full beard. It was exactly as fun as it sounds. I was told there was an excellent chance that this would cure me after a kind of ‘cancer gap year’.
