A high school has closed to two full year groups because of positive Covid cases among staff. Parents with children at Fred Longworth High School received an email this morning, Monday, telling them that all pupils in Years 8 and 9 should 'remain at home with immediate effect, initially until Wednesday'.

Headteacher Paul Davies said: "As I am sure you are aware, although there is no legal requirement for people who have tested positive for Covid-19 to self-isolate, there are still very clear guidelines in place for educational settings. "These guidelines require any staff and students who test positive to stay away from school for between 5 and 10 days, dependent on having two consecutive clear LFD tests.

The move comes less than two weeks after the school, in Tyldesley, Wigan, held its first face-to-face parents evening with Year 8 parents since the pandemic began.

Pupils have been told that 'live' lessons will be delivered via Microsoft Teams and a small group of vulnerable students from the affected year groups will still be able to attend school.
