SURFSIDE, Fla. - The painstaking search of a collapsed condo building in Florida switched to a recovery effort after officials came to the conclusion that there was "no chance of life" in the rubble after nearly two weeks. At least 54 people were killed in the June 24 collapse of the Champlain Towers South building in Surfside, located just north of Miami Beach.
Officials said Wednesday evening that 86 people were unaccounted for, although detectives were still working to verify that each of those listed as missing was actually in the building when it collapsed.Rescuers had spent 14 days digging in the mound of concrete and twisted steel, searching in vain for any sign of life, Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said at a news.
