PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia Police Department is grieving the loss of one of their own after an off-duty officer was killed in a crash in Somerton on Thursday. Philadelphia Chief Inspector Scott Small says just before midnight, officers in the 7th District received numerous calls about a crash at the intersection of Bustleton Avenue and Rennard Street. According to authorities, when officers and medics arrived on scene, they found two vehicles involved in the crash. A Philadelphia police officer was killed in a crash while on his way home from work, authorities say. FOX 29's Steve Keeley has the latest.A 50-year-old man driving a Hyundai was transported to Jefferson-Torresdale Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival, authorities say. The vehicle that struck the officer's car was a BMW with an 18-year-old driver and two teenage passengers, police say. None of the individuals in the BMW were injured and they denied medical treatment, according to officials. MORE LOCAL HEADLINESInvestigators say the Hyundai was traveling west on Rennard Street crossing Bustelon Avenue as the BMW was going south on Bustleton Avenue. The BMW struck the passenger side of the Hyundai, jumped the curb and then struck a tree, per authorities. Police say a witness spoke to accident investigators and say the BMW was traveling at a high rate of speed. Small says through the investigation,  police learned the driver of the Hyundai was an active Philadelphia police officer who had just finished the night shift and was driving home in his personal vehicle. The officer was a 27-year veteran with the Philadelphia Police Department, according to Small. "It's a real tragedy," Small said.

PHILADELPHIA - A pair of dognappers stormed into a Philadelphia man's home and stole his French bulldog puppy that he recently got for his daughter. Kevin Long told FOX 29 that he brought the dog named Chaos home less than a week ago to give to his 11-year-old daughter. On Wednesday night police say two men, one armed with a gun, forced their way into Long's home on the 4800 block of Darrah Street and demanded the dog. Chaos, a French bulldog, was stolen from a Philadelphia home Wednesday night. According to police the suspects knocked on Long's door and asked for someone who doesn't live there.

  PHOENIX - Eight people were rescued from Camelback Mountain after multiple members of their hiking group began suffering from heat-related illness Thursday afternoon, Phoenix fire officials said.A women's church group had reportedly started hiking Echo Canyon Trail earlier in the morning for a retreat. Fire officials say the group consisted of women from Alabama, Tennessee, and California, and that they were filming for a documentary called "Bad Girls Gone God," where they embark on strenuous activities to get closer to God.The hikers reportedly told fire crews that they did not do their research before starting the hike at 7 a.m. Several of the hikers were wheeled down the trail, and two had to be brought down by helicopter.

PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia Police Department is investigating a fatal crash that killed a teenager and injured another person in West Philadelphia. According to Chief Inspector Scott Small, the incident happened just after 11 p.m. on Wednesday night. Officers with the 16th District and fire department paramedics received multiple 911 calls for a report of a car crash on the 800 block of N 44th Street, authorities say. Small says first responders found a 16-year-old severely injured and a 20-year-old with injuries on the sidewalk. The 16-year-old was taken to a local hospital, but he did not survive, according to police. Authorities say the 20-year-old was taken to the hospital and placed in stable condition with a possible broken leg. Investigators say a 27-year-old was driving a Toyota Highlander that crashed into the two pedestrians. Small says the driver has cuts and bruises and is suspected to be impaired.

COATESVILLE, Pa. - Coatesville police are seeking information regarding the location of two endangered missing people.Shalika Shelton, 30, and her 10-year-old daughter Cartier Jackson were thought to be somewhere in Philadelphia.Jackson's legal guardian is her godmother, according to officials.

PHILADELPHIA - Authorities say 40 shots were fired Wednesday night in a triple shooting that erupted between at least two shooters. Officers from the Philadelphia Police Department were called to the 4200 block of Lancaster Avenue just before 9:30 p.m. for reports of a shooting. Police found a 36-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man both shot in the leg.

PHILADELPHIA - An energy company says its plan to build a multi-billion dollar liquid natural gas facility on the banks of the Delaware River would be a boon for the local economy, but some have stressed environmental concerns.Penn-America Energy is mulling several spots between South Philadelphia and Marcus Hook for its hundred-acre facility natural gas liquefaction facility and export terminal, which would be the largest on the east coast. Penn-America Energy CEO Frac James told FOX 29 that the estimated $7 billion facility would create 4,000 new jobs. The facility would produce 7M tons of liquid natural a year to be exported overseas. "This enables Pennsylvania and the region's specifically southeastern Pennsylvania to have a role in the decarbonization of our planet," James said.Some residents in Chester, where developers are considering the old Ford plant, have some hesitations about the environmental impact and safety concerns. "We want the type of companies that other communities compete for," Zulene Mayfield said.

PHILADELPHIA - Police have released a new video showing the moment a suspect gunned down a 76-year-old man who was out on his morning walk Tuesday.Loi Nguyen, 76, was found shot once in the head near his driveway in the alleyway behind L and Claridge streets just before 6 a.m. Police say surveillance video shows the Nguyen walking with his hands seemingly in his pockets when he is approached from behind by a suspect in a red hoodie and sneakers. PHILADELPHIA - Investigators with the Philadelphia Police Department are looking into a case involving a woman who was reportedly lit on fire in Kensington. According to Chief Inspector Frank Vanore, police were made aware of the incident over the weekend. Authorities say they received a video and sent investigators to search for answers. According to Vanore, police believe the victim, an unidentified woman, was in a park with a man on the 1800 block of E Tioga when they got into an argument with another woman. Police say witnesses reported that the woman poured a liquid on the victim and the man before lighting it on fire. The man, who catches fire, runs from the scene, according to police.

PHILADELPHIA - A St. Joseph's University student has been hospitalized after police say he was the victim of an attempted carjacking Wednesday morning.Police say the student was getting out of his car when he was approached by a black Dodge Caravan on Upland Way around 1:30 a.m.Two masked suspects got out of the van, and allegedly tried to steal his keys and car.When the students tried to fight them off, police say one of the suspects hit him in the head with a handgun.Two shots were then fired at the student, hitting him in the knee, according to police.

PHILADELPHIA - An investigation is underway after a man died after being shot in South Philadelphia, according to police. Captain John Walker with the Philadelphia Police Department says the shooting took place on Tuesday night around 11:45 p.m. He says officers with the 3rd District responded to a shooting on 4th and Oregon in the South Philadelphia area. According to authorities, officers found a man with a gunshot wound in his neck in a rented SUV. Medics arrived on scene and rushed the man to Jefferson Hospital where he was first placed in critical condition but later died, officials say. MORE LOCAL HEADLINESInvestigators say they learned the SUV was driving on Ritner Street when at least 12 shots were fired at the passenger side of the vehicle. According to police, investigators are still working to learn if the victim was a driver or passenger. Authorities say there are currently no witnesses but they are urging anyone with information to contact police.

AUSTIN, Texas - The head of the Texas Department of Public Safety says three minutes after a gunman entered a school where he slaughtered 19 elementary students and two teachers there was sufficient armed law enforcement on scene to stop the gunman. Yet police officers armed with rifles stood and waited in a school hallway for nearly an hour while the gunman carried out the massacre. Col.
