COMMENTARY: Is the COVID-19 vaccine safe for children? There’s a lot to consider
Even with new COVID-19 vaccine approvals, rollout won’t increase before April In pediatrics, we are often asked what’s the definition of a child. Well, since Pfizer trials have included people 16 years and older, then for these purposes we are really looking at birth to 15 years.Should we really be vaccinating our children if the disease has very little adverse consequences for their age group? Historically, we have immunized against diseases like polio and diphtheria that were a clear danger to children. The same cannot be said for SARS-CoV-2 — symptoms are mostly mild, which is leading to a suspicion that we have failed to identify many active cases.

Suspension of licence renewal requirements for Ontario drivers 80 and older raises concerns
Ontarians aged 80 and older during the pandemic has some in the medical community raising concerns about the risks the move poses to those on the road.Residents aged 80 and older need to renew their licence every two years. The process involves a vision test, an education session, a review of driving records, a screening exercise, and, if needed, a road test.Last March however, in an effort to limit gatherings during the pandemic, Ontario paused licence renewal sessions for drivers aged 80 and older, and waived vision testing requirements.

Ontario school boards that straddle public health units are gearing up to reopen only a portion of their schools to in-person learning next week, adding another layer of complexity to an academic year that’s been defined by quick pivots. The government order allowing schools in seven public health units to reopen physical classrooms as of Monday means nine boards now have to create different plans for different towns in their jurisdiction.“It’s definitely more difficult to have one board be going in two different directions,” said Diane Lloyd, chair of the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board, which oversees schools in Clarington, Ont., that will remain closed and ones in Northumberland and Peterborough that will reopen.

Why people under 40 in parts of Trafford are being vaccinated - despite the fact they’re not key workers and don’t have underlying health conditions
direct to your inboxHealth bosses have explained why people under 40 may be getting a vaccine jab in Trafford - despite not being a key worker or having underlying health conditions.Concerns were raised by some residents after people outside the highest priority groups were given the Covid-19 vaccine in Hale this week.Primary care bosses said they are offering the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine to those outside the highest vulnerability cohorts to make sure stocks of the jab are used up before they expire and need to be thrown out.The difficult storage conditions necessary particularly for the Pfizer/BioNTech coronavirus jab means it has a ‘limited shelf life’ and needs to be used within around five days of being taken out of a freezer.Residents
