WAUKESHA, Wis. - Opening statements were expected to begin Thursday morning, Oct. 6 in the trial of Darrell Brooks  – accused in the Waukesha Christmas parade attack.

PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia Police Department's Special Victims Unit is asking for the public's help to identify a suspect wanted in connection with the sexual assault of a teenage girl. Police say the man entered a private residence on the 2500 block of South 3rd Street on September 21 around 10:30 p.m. Authorities say they do not know how the man gained access to the home. While inside the residence, the man used a flashlight to go through drawers before sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl, police say. MORE LOCAL HEADLINESThe suspect later fled the home and was last seen walking south on the 2600 block of South Hancock Street, according to authorities. Officials say the teen's wallet and Visa card were also stolen by the suspect. Anyone with information on the incident or suspect is asked to contact Philadelphia police. 

COLOMBO (News 1st) – A triple homicide was reported from the Minuwangoda area this morning, and reports suggest that these murders are linked to a kite case dating back to 2017.At 6:30 AM on Thursday (6) morning, the time when many Sri Lankans are waking up, three men were brutally gunned down in Gamangedara, Minuwangoda.A 51-year-old man and his two sons 23-years-old, and 24-year-old were brutally murdered adding more bodies to a string of murders.Multiple shooters had visited their residence on a motorcycle, and a car and carried out the murder.Unconfirmed reports said that the shooters were impersonating law enforcement personnel, and T-56 assault rifles were used for the murder.The shooters have chased away the mother and sister of the two young men out of the house before carrying out the shooting. 51-year-old Pushpakumara Silva alias Ralahamy died upon admission to the hospital, and his two sons 23-year-old Roshan Maduwanta and 24-year-old Suresh Jeewantha died on the spot.Sri Lanka Police and neighbors' revealed to News 1st that a dispute over a kite dating back to 2017 was the root cause for the murders.On the 25th of August 2017, one of the young men who was gunned down on Thursday (6) was flying a kite in a field nearby, and it had gotten entangled with the kite sent up by Suraj Dananjaya, another young in the same neighbourhood.The dispute between the men escalated to the next level, when Suraj Dananjaya's father Lal Premasiri visited the house of the slain men along with his son to inquire into the matter.It was reported that following an exchange of words Ralahamy and his two sons who were killed on Thursday (6), and Ralahamy's brother had brutally killed Suraj Dananjaya and his father.As the matter went to

NEW CASTLE, Del. - Detectives with the New Castle Division of Police Case Squad have released new surveillance video in an effort to solve a homicide from 2015. Police say the deadly shooting of Kelvin Powers took place on February 11, 2015, at 6:55 p.m. Officers were dispatched to Amstel Drive, part of the William Penn Village Apartments, after receiving reports of a shooting. Investigators say Powers' girlfriend was leaving the apartment with her young son when she was confronted by two armed suspects wearing masks.

PHILADELPHIA - Police are investigating a shooting in West Philadelphia that left a woman in critical condition on Thursday morning, according to police. Authorities say police responded to the 700 block of South 60th Street at 1:18 a.m. According to officials, a woman was found lying on the steps of a friend's home, bleeding heavily from her head. MORE LOCAL HEADLINESChief Inspector Scott Small says the woman is undergoing surgery at Presbyterian Hospital and is in extremely critical condition. Investigators believe the woman was shot by someone across the street as she was walking up the stairs, but are unsure if she was targeted, police say. This is a developing story.

PHILADELPHIA - A man is lucky to be alive after police say a group of four suspects fired more than 30 shots at him in Overbrook last month. According to police, the shooting occurred on September 21 around 8:30 p.m. on the 1400 block of North 75th Street in Philadelphia's Overbrook neighborhood. Authorities say surveillance video released shows four men firing down the street toward the male victim. MORE LOCAL HEADLINESMore than 30 shots were fired, leaving several cars and homes in the area struck, officials say. The intended target was "amazingly" not struck by gunfire, according to police. Police are asking anyone with information on the shooting to contact police by calling 215-686-8477 or submitting an anonymous form online.

BANGKOK - At least 24 children and 11 adults were killed Thursday in an attack that began at a childcare center in northeastern Thailand, authorities said. PHILADELPHIA - A former Pennsylvania elementary school principal is facing charges after police say he peered into the windows of several South Jersey homes and even tried to force a woman into her bedroom.Danny McEaddy was arrested in August after investigators believe he spent 7 months looking into windows of homes around Sicklerville. The Upper Darby School District confirmed to FOX 29 that McEaddy was the principal at Hillcrest Elementary school. Investigators from the Winslow Township Police Department say in February McEaddy entered a woman's home and tried to force her into her bedroom, but got away before police arrived. In May, police say he returned to the home and peered into the window. McEaddy was arrested in August when police say he was caught peering into a home in Pitman Borough.

WILMINGTON, Del. - Nearly a month after a 68-year-old jewelry store owner was brutally attacked during a mid-morning robbery, his family is speaking out about the day that changed all of their lives forever. At around 10:40 a.m., Wilmington police say they responded to the 100 block of West 9th Street for reports of a robbery. COLOMBO (News 1st) – Sri Lanka Police fired tear gas in Mullaithivu on Wednesday (5) to prevent a brawl from taking place  between two groups of fishermen.Fishermen from Mullaithivu have been protesting opposite the Mullaithivu Fisheries Office for three days citing several demands including a ban on illegal fishing methods and the transfer of corrupt officials.While this protest was taking place, another group marched in protest from the Mullaithivu Bus Terminal demanding that a certain type fishing net locally known as the 'Surukku Dela' be permitted to be used for fishing, though it has been banned in Sri Lanka.The group then attempted to march towards the Mullaithivu Fisheries Office.Despite Sri Lanka Police attempting to prevent them marching ahead, the group broke through and Sri Lanla Police were forced to fire tear gas to disperse the crowd.After tear gas was fired, the fishermen who demanded permission to use the banned fishing net protested opposite the Mullaithivu District Secretariat.They handed over a letter to the Mullaithivu District Secretary, and thereafter with Police and Military protection handed over a letter to the Mullaithivu Fisheries Department as well.The group thereafter moved away, however, the fishermen who want to ban the use of the said nets continued with their protest.

PHILADELPHIA - Two teenagers walking down a Philadelphia street were shot by a gunman who got out of a vehicle, and now police say that driver is in custody.Police found the teens, ages 14 and 16, suffering from gunshot wounds to the body when they responded to 54th and Willows streets on September 29.

Police say they are investigating a double shooting that killed one man after a shootout erupted after a three-car accident in North Philadelphia.  PHILADELPHIA - Police are investigating a shooting that left one man dead and another injured after a car accident turned into a deadly shootout during rush hour in North Philadelphia on Tuesday.At around 5:06 p.m., police say they responded to the 3600 block of Broad Street for reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, police say they located a 33-year-old man lying in the northbound lanes of Broad Street, suffering multiple gunshot wounds to his chest. Police picked up the victim and took him to Temple Hospital where they say he was pronounced dead at 6:18 p.m.While investigating the scene, police say they also located a 38-year-old man who was suffering a gunshot wound to the leg.

STOCKTON, Calif. - Ballistics tests have linked the fatal shootings of six men and the wounding of one woman in Northern California — all potentially at the hands of a serial killer — in crimes going back more than a year, police said.Authorities last week announced that five men in Stockton had been slain in recent months, ambushed and shot to death alone in the dark. INDIALANTIC, Fla. - The mayor of a Florida town was arrested after police said he hit another man in the face with a rake while they were cleaning up a park in Brevard County after Hurricane Ian. David Berkman, 59, is facing a misdemeanor battery charge.According to an affidavit from the Indialantic Police Department, the victim – Melvyn Chang – and Berkman were both in Orlando Park in Indialantic on Friday assisting with cleanup efforts after Hurricane Ian spread debris across the area. Police said Chang was sitting on a picnic table recording Berkman after Berkman allegedly made several comments about "kicking his a**," the affidavit stated. MORE NEWS: Florida deputy, 21, shot and killed while serving warrant in Polk City, sheriff saysThe report went on to say that "after several minutes the defendant walked up and shoved a leaf rake with a plastic end into the face of the victim causing the rake to hit the victims phone and his face."The victim reportedly captured the incident on his cellphone. No other information has been released about the incident.

Former Philadelphia police officer Edsaul Mendoza is facing murder charges for fatally shooting 12-year-old TJ Siderio in March.  PHILADELPHIA - A former Philadelphia police officer accused of fatally shooting a young boy earlier this year will head to trial on all charges, a judge ruled on Tuesday.Former officer Edsaul Mendoza is facing multiple charges including first-degree murder, third-degree murder and voluntary manslaughter in connection with the deadly shooting of 12-year-old Thomas "TJ" Siderio.Investigators say four plainclothes officers in an unmarked car were patrolling the area near the 1700 block of Barbara Street around 7 p.m. on March 1 when they spotted two juveniles on bikes. RELATED COVERAGE According to investigators, officers noticed that one of the juveniles was armed with a handgun and turned on the emergency lights to confront him.

PHILADELPHIA - An alleged mail fraud scheme could mean prison time and up to $8.5-million-fines for three men from the Philadelphia area.Sam Wolo, 21, of Philadelphia; Bruno Nyanue, 20, of Philadelphia; and Gransae Manue, 20, of Clifton Heights are charged with conspiracy to commit bank fraud, bank fraud, aggravated identity theft, conspiracy to commit mail theft, possession of stolen mail and robbery of a postal carrier. All three men stole or attempted to steal more than $170,000 by "washing" and depositing checks and money orders stolen from USPS mailboxes in Drexel Hill, according to the U.S. District Attorney's Office.The stolen checks were often altered with amounts greater than the original value, without the victim's knowledge.Officials say they were able to repeatedly steal from mailboxes after forcibly robbing a letter carrier of his Arrow Key.MORE HEADLINES:About 372 stolen checks and 11 money orders totaling more than $170,000 were reportedly found in Wolo's apartment and vehicle. If convicted, Wolo faces a maximum of 236 years in prison and a possible fine of up to $8.5 million.

PHILADELPHIA - Investigators with the Philadelphia Police Department are searching for a teenager wanted in connection with a deadly ambush near Roxborough High School last week. Officers are searching for Dayron Burney-Thorne, 16, in connection with the shooting that left one football player dead and four other teens injured on the 300 block of Fairway Terrace on the afternoon of September 27. A 14-year-old was killed in a quadruple shooting that erupted following a football scrimmage at Roxborough High School Tuesday afternoon. Another 14-year-old and a 17-year-old were also hurt in the shooting but are expected to survive.

COLOMBO (News 1st) – The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka advised that Sri Lanka Police should act with responsibility and take all necessary steps for the protection and safety of Wasantha Mudalige, a suspect currently in detention.Sri Lanka's Human Rights Commission on Tuesday (4) said that every single person is entitled to equal protection of the law.It added that no citizen shall be discriminated on the grounds of political opinion.

PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia police released video in a double shooting that left two injured last week, one in critical condition.An 18-year-old and 25-year-old man were riding their bikes when they were ambushed with gunfire on the 6100 block of Market Street on September 30.Police say two suspects fired several shots after exiting the passenger side of a dark-colored minivan, possibly a Kia Sedona. They fled in the same vehicle.Surveillance video shows the suspects immediately opening fire on the victims as they rode towards them.MORE HEADLINES:The 18-year-old was shot in the leg, and placed in stable condition.

PHILADELPHIA - A man has died after he was shot in the neck in Philadelphia, authorities say. According to police, officers responded to Ogontz and Stenton Avenues just before 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Officials say responding officers found a man walking in the area bleeding heavily from a gunshot wound to his neck. Witnesses told authorities that the man got out of a Buick Sedan traveling northbound on Ogontz Avenue that stopped at the intersection, and Good Samaritans rushed to try and assist him, according to Chief Inspector Scott Small. MORE LOCAL HEADLINESPolice transported the man to Einstein Medical Center, where he was placed in critical condition and underwent surgery, Small says. Authorities say he did not survive and later died. According to Small, the Buick Sedan is still parked at the crime scene and there is blood in the driver's seat. Investigators say they are not sure if the man was driving the vehicle or driven to the location, but authorities do not believe the shooting happened in the area.

Kyrgios wanted the hearing to be closer - but he wanted to attend the hearing in person."My client's preference is to attend in person," Kyrgios' lawyers told the court.
