NEW CASTLE, De. - Delaware is pledging nearly $4 million to place water filters in public schools due to a concerning level of lead in the drinking water. State officials announced the funding on Monday after water tests at some of the state's public school highlighted the need for immediate action. The Castle Hills Elementary School in New Castle is having its fountains shut-off and water coolers brought in to provide safe drinking water in the meantime.Parents, like Wilmington mom Sarah Bucic, called the filters a "critical" step for preventing lead from getting into school-aged children's developing bodies. MORE LOCAL HEADLINES"It's enraging because the cost to society is so high and it's 100% preventable," Bucic said. An administrator in the Colonial School District says parents have been informed of the lead concerns in Castle Hills.

FORT DIX - For the first time in five years, Joint Base McGuier-Dix-Lakehurst held a free airshow that organizers hope will inspire the next generation of military aviation fanatics. The event, called Power in the Pines, was placed on hold for half a decade due to finical backing, the coronavirus pandemic, and the base being used to house Afghan refugees. "It's been a long time since we've been able to open the base to the public due to several conditions and reasons, but now we have a literal line of school buses half a mile long to let the kids in on day one of the airshow," Col. PHILADELPHIA - Authorities in Philadelphia are trying to identify a masked man who they believe was involved in a shooting at a parking lot ATM. The Philadelphia Police Department on Friday shared pictures of the masked suspect, dressed entirely in black with gray sneakers. Authorities believe the unidentified suspect is white or Hispanic and may have a tattoo on his left hand, according to the surveillance pictures. Police were called to the Roosevelt Plaza Shopping Center on 6500 Roosevelt Boulevard Wednesday night for reports of a shooting. Officer from the Philadelphia Police Department found a 53-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wounds to the chest and leg lying next to his car. The victim, who has not been publicly identified, was taken to Jefferson-Torresdale Hospital where he was admitted in critical condition. Investigators say Wednesday night's shooting was the third violent incident that happened at the ATM.MORE LOCAL HEADLINESHours before the shooting, police responded to the shopping center parking lot after a man who was using the ATM was carjacked at gunpoint by someone who got out of a suspected stolen car.Police say last Friday a 20-year-old man who was using the ATM to deposit a check to use for rent was assaulted, robbed and carjacked by two men in ski masks. Investigators suspect all three incidents may have been carried out by the same person or group, but they have not been able to confirm that theory.

LEVITTOWN, Pa. - A somber celebration was held Thursday to recognize the completion of a sidewalk project that was spearheaded by a Pennsylvania mother whose son was fatally struck by a car over a decade ago. John Rearick was killed in July 2012 while walking along a stretch of New Falls Road in Levittown. No sidewalk and overgrown trees forced John to walk in the median where he was hit from behind. Since John's death, his heartbroken mother Sharon Rearick has spent tireless hours culling support for a sidewalk project, so people can safely walk next to traffic on New Falls Road. "To make it okay in my brain and my heart, I had to do something," Sharon said.

ALLOWY, N.J. - Over a dozen structures are being threatened by an uncontained wildfire burning in Salem County, according to officials. The New Jersey Forrest Fire Service on Thursday said crews are battling the blaze at the former Holly Hills Golf Course in Alloway. The fire is currently threatening 15 structures and has consumed 10 acres, according to the service. Firefighters are conducting containment lines and burnout operations to contain and slow the fire's progression, officials said. No roads have been closed and no one has been evacuated.

CRANSTON, R.I. - A Rhode Island city council member and former chair of the local Republican Party is facing calls to resign after he was found sleeping in his car with a crack pipe in hand.According to local reports, a passerby in Cranston, Rhode Island, saw a man possibly choking in his car Monday and alerted an officer nearby. When police arrived, "he appeared to be sleeping or unconscious while having difficulty breathing/choking," arrest reports state.The responding officer had to shake the man to wake him up, then noticed a glass pipe and a lighter in his hand.

PHILADELPHIA - Authorities have announced an arrest in an incident outside a Philadelphia speakeasy that left three people with serious injuries last year.Joel Martinez, 22, was arrested in connection with the incident that occurred back on June 12, 2022, near Rosehill and East Westmoreland streets.Martinez is accused of shooting a young woman and a teenage girl while also pistol-whipping a trans woman. Police say the victims were leaving the nightclub when they encountered another group of people, including Martinez. At that time, Martinez allegedly uttered a derogatory word at one of the victims and an argument ensued. During the argument, police say Martinez pulled out a handgun and fire at least six shots, striking two of the victims.

PHILADELPHIA - A man is fighting for his life after police say he was shot near an ATM machine in Philadelphia's Oxford Circle neighborhood. Officers from the Philadelphia Police Department were called to the 6500 block of Roosevelt Boulevard around 9 p.m. for reports of a shooting. Chief Inspector Scott Small reports the victim, a man, was near an ATM machine when someone shot him in the neck. He was taken to a nearby hospital where police say he is in critical condition. Investigators have not said what lead to the shooting.
