Covid infections up in 54 areas in England as number of places seeing a rise triples

More than 50 towns and cities in England have seen a rise in Covid cases in the past week, worrying data shows. Latest figures from Public Health England reveal that 54 areas saw more people test positive for coronavirus in the seven days to Friday than the week before, despite nearly two months of national lockdown.

This time last week, The Mirror reported that just 16 areas had seen a week-on-week rise, while two weeks ago the number was six.

Figures from January 25, more than three weeks after England was plunged into its third national lockdown, show there were 27 areas recording a rise.
