The Minister for Health has told the Dáil that the reproductive number has fallen to between 0.7 and 1.4 and has been stabilising.
It had been between 1.2 and 1.8 last week. The reproductive rate, or 'R number', indicates the number of people on average that an infected person will pass the virus on to.
Stephen Donnelly said the reduction was due to the efforts of the public in suppressing the virus. For Covid-19, the World Health Organization says that data to date suggests that 80% of infections are mild or asymptomatic,15% are severe infection, requiring oxygen and 5% are critical, requiring ventilation.
