Worldwide, about 10.5 million children may have lost parents or caregivers to COVID-19 and 7.5 million were orphaned, according to new study that estimated excess mortality using World Health Organization (WHO) data.In the study, published today in JAMA Pediatrics, a University of Oxford researcher led a team in analyzing excess COVID-19–related deaths from Jan 1, 2020, to May 1, 2022.

The team noted that previous global total estimates and country-level comparisons were limited by inconsistencies in COVID-19 testing and incomplete death reporting.An estimated 10.5 million children lost parents or caregivers to COVID-19, and 7.5 million were orphaned, with the greatest numbers in the Africa (24.3%) and Southeast Asia (40.6%) WHO regions and the least in the Americas (14.0%), Eastern Mediterranean (14.6%), European (4.7%), and Western Pacific (1.8%) regions.In Southeast Asia, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Myanmar, and Nepal had the most bereaved children.

In Africa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa were hardest hit. At the national level, the most bereft children were in India (3.5 million), Indonesia (660,000), Egypt (450,000), Nigeria (430,000), and Pakistan (410,000).A 'public health imperative' to support orphansThe consequences of parental or caregiver loss and orphanhood can be catastrophic, the researchers said, including institutionalization, abuse, traumatic grief, mental illness, teen pregnancy, low educational achievement, and chronic and infectious diseases.Little is apparently being done to care for the bereaved children despite billions of dollars being invested in preventing COVID-19 deaths, the authors said, with only Peru and the United States making

(Reuters) – Sri Lanka's central bank is likely to maintain interest rates on Thursday in an effort to get a grip on inflation which has remained stubbornly high despite a sharp contraction in the crisis-hit economy.Nine out of 14 economists and analysts polled by Reuters said they expect rates to remain unchanged as the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) waits for the effects of its earlier hikes to filter through to the economy and for inflation to stabilise as the economy cools."The pace of inflation appears to be slowing but it is also largely cost push inflation caused by depreciation and global commodity prices, which a rate hike would have limited impact on," said Dimantha Mathew, head of research for Colombo-based investment firm First Capital.The CBSL has raised rates by a record 950 basis points this year to battle high inflation which is adding to the country's economic woes.However, inflation has remained high, hitting a record peak of 68.9% in September with food inflation climbing to 93.7%.Sri Lanka's economy shrank 8.4% in the quarter through June from a year ago in one of the steepest declines seen in a three-month period, amid fertilizer and fuel shortages.

PHILADELPHIA - An alleged mail fraud scheme could mean prison time and up to $8.5-million-fines for three men from the Philadelphia area.Sam Wolo, 21, of Philadelphia; Bruno Nyanue, 20, of Philadelphia; and Gransae Manue, 20, of Clifton Heights are charged with conspiracy to commit bank fraud, bank fraud, aggravated identity theft, conspiracy to commit mail theft, possession of stolen mail and robbery of a postal carrier. All three men stole or attempted to steal more than $170,000 by "washing" and depositing checks and money orders stolen from USPS mailboxes in Drexel Hill, according to the U.S. District Attorney's Office.The stolen checks were often altered with amounts greater than the original value, without the victim's knowledge.Officials say they were able to repeatedly steal from mailboxes after forcibly robbing a letter carrier of his Arrow Key.MORE HEADLINES:About 372 stolen checks and 11 money orders totaling more than $170,000 were reportedly found in Wolo's apartment and vehicle. If convicted, Wolo faces a maximum of 236 years in prison and a possible fine of up to $8.5 million.

NEWPORT TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Investigators with Pennsylvania State Police have identified a set of human remains as a teen missing for more than 50 years. According to the agency, the human remains were discovered in Luzerne County on November 17, 2002, on the grounds of a former coal-mining operation in Newport Township. Police say the remains have been identified as Joan Marie Dymond, who was 14 years old when she disappeared from Andover Street Park on June 25, 1969. Examination of the remains reveals that Dymond died of suspicious circumstances and lab results indicate that it is highly likely that she died in the late 1960s, troopers say. Investigators were able to identify Dymond by using DNA and comparing it to a DNA sample provided by Dymond's family, according to the agency. MORE LOCAL HEADLINES"We never stopped pursuing answers, and this investigation remains very active," Captain Patrick Dougherty said. "After 23 years, the family of Joan Marie Dymond very much deserves closure.

PHILADELPHIA - Investigators with the Philadelphia Police Department are searching for a teenager wanted in connection with a deadly ambush near Roxborough High School last week. Officers are searching for Dayron Burney-Thorne, 16, in connection with the shooting that left one football player dead and four other teens injured on the 300 block of Fairway Terrace on the afternoon of September 27. A 14-year-old was killed in a quadruple shooting that erupted following a football scrimmage at Roxborough High School Tuesday afternoon. Another 14-year-old and a 17-year-old were also hurt in the shooting but are expected to survive.
