Covid-19: 4,195 cases as public urged to 'socialise safely' during bank holiday

The Department of Health has been notified of 4,195 new cases of Covid-19, including 1,936 PCR-confirmed cases of the virus and 2,259 positive antigen tests registered through the HSE portal.

As of 8am today, there were 904 patients with the virus in hospital, a reduction of 29 on yesterday's figure. There are 57 Covid-19 patients in intensive care, down one person on yesterday.

In a statement this afternoon, the department has asked the public to "socialise safely and maintain our focus on protecting those most vulnerable to the severe effects of Covid-19, as well as ourselves".

The department is asking anyone who has symptoms of the virus to self-isolate until 48 hours after symptoms have substantially or fully resolved. "Please do not attend any social events, work, school or college if you have symptoms." Mask wearing is advised on public transport and in healthcare settings, with the statement saying that "anyone who wishes to wear a mask should not be discouraged from doing so". "Continue to practise good hand and respiratory hygiene by washing and sanitising hands regularly and coughing/sneezing into your elbow.
