Coronavirus spike in north continues - with one area doubling infection rates

South Tyneside is rocketing up the coronavirus infection rate charts as its figures double in just one week. The local authority area is now behind only Bolton, in Greater Manchester, after seeing its cases surge up by 92% in just one week.

Burnley in Lancashire, is in third place, where the rate has risen from 112.5 to 204.7, with 182 new cases. It comes as the UK government faces questions over its new national measures, as areas that have been under local lockdowns for weeks continue to record surges.
