Coronavirus may have been spreading in the UK as early as December, according to experts. China first declared its first infection to the World Health Organisation (WHO) on December 8, while the UK recorded its first case on January 31.

But according to government data seen by South China Morning Post, the first known case was observed on November 17. And it has led to fears Covid-19 may have been in the UK shortly after.

Dr Stephen Baker, of Cambridge University's Infectious Diseases Institute, told the Guardian: "Let's say it was kicking off fairly substantially in Wuhan and people weren't being informed: could there have been people travelling to and from China at that point who may have been infected by coronavirus?
