Almost 20,000 people in care homes have died with coronavirus, while and one in five residents were infected. Between March 2 and June 12, a total of 19,394 deaths had Covid-19 mentioned on the death certificate, whether as an underlying cause or not.
Of these, 16,305 (84%) were classified as "confirmed" Covid-19 and 3,089 (16%) were classified as "suspected" Covid-19. Latest figures released by the Office of National Statistics this morning come as Boris Johnson was asked if an earlier lockdown could have prevented more care home deaths.
