Consultants seek 'urgent' plan as hospital waiting list hits 843,336

New figures show that hospital waiting lists increased by almost 24,000 last month with 843,336 patients now waiting for treatment or to be seen at a clinic.

There were 622,963 patients waiting for an appointment at an outpatient clinic, up over 16,700 on the number in December. Waiting lists in most areas have risen, including for inpatient and day case treatment where there are 81,456 patients who need care.

The figures were published this evening by the National Treatment Purchase Fund. The Irish Hospital Consultants' Association urged the Government to "urgently put in place the capacity and resources over the coming months to catch up on the essential hospital care that is being postponed or delayed due to the pandemic".
