Professor Chris Whitty has said there is a 'reasonable chance' Covid-19 vaccinations could be less effective against the new strain of the virus.
The first cases of the Omicron variant were identified in the UK today and England’s chief medical officer said it was “inevitable” it will continue to spread across the world over the next few days.
Professor Whitty added that Omicron is highly transmissible, it is not yet clear how effective the vaccine will be as protection against it – but said those who are vaccinated or receive the booster jab will be less likely to become seriously ill.
