NORTH WILDWOOD, N.J. - The City of North Wildwood has terminated its contract with its waste removal company amid threats from the company saying they'd leave trash in the streets, city officials allege. According to a press release from the city, the contract with Gold Medal Environmental New Jersey, Inc. (GME) was terminated. The city says GME is a "subsidiary of the multibillion-dollar private equity firm Kinderhook Industries, headquartered in New York City." According to the city, GME's CEO showed up at the North Wildwood Public Works Building on March 8 insisting that the city pay GME two to three times the agreed upon contract amount or the company would "leave the trash in the streets." According to a legal document sent to GME's leaders, in an email sent on April 25, GME's CEO said: "My message hasn't changed: trash (or recycling or yard waste, etc) will start being left on the streets May 1 (whatever we cannot afford to pick up at current contract prices) if we are not back in good faith negotiations to address this emergency situation as other towns have already, and your offices will choose both where this starts and ends.

PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia police are investigating a crash involving a car and pedestrian early Saturday morning in Center City. According to police, a silver 2017 Mercedes was traveling southbound on Broad Street at a high rate of speed and the driver disregarded several red traffic lights. Authorities say a 32-year-old man was in the crosswalk of Broad and Locust Streets when he was struck by the car. The car continued to Broad and Pine Streets where it stopped to wait for police, investigators say. ___MORE LOCAL HEADLINESAccording to police, the car was severely damaged. The victim was taken to a local hospital with severe head trauma and was listed in critical condition, authorities say. AdvertisementPolice did not say why the car's operator, a 23-year-old woman, drove through the red lights, but authorities say charges are pending. 

ANDOVER, Kan. - Severe storms across Kansas produced softball-sized hail and several tornadoes Friday, leaving behind damage and thousands without power.Several videos from Andover, Kansas, showed at least one of the tornadoes moving through areas populated with businesses and homes. Only minor injuries have been reported at this time."We know there was a direct tornado strike that started in Sedgwick County and traveled into Andover. PHILADELPHIA - As investigators work to determine what sparked a Kensington rowhome fire that killed a father and his three children last weekend, Philadelphia is battling a backlog of unfulfilled smoke alarm requests.Yamalier, 5, Yadriel, 9, and 12-year-old Alexangel Arroyo-Santana perished in a rowhome fire early Sunday morning on the 3200 block of Hartville Street in Kensington. Neighbors say their father, Alexis, also died in the blaze after he told his wife to jump out a window to safety while he went further into the home to save the children. "He had a chance to jump out, but he ended up telling his wife to jump out of the window. He’ll get the children, so he died a hero," a neighbor who asked to remain anonymous said.Fire investigators have not pinpointed what started the fire, but they said no smoke alarms were sounding when firefighters arrived. The School District of Philadelphia identified three children killed in a rowhome fire as Yamalier, 5, Yadriel, 9, and 12-year-old Alexangel.
