The Brazilian agency that regulates health insurance plans has opened an investigation into allegations that a hospital chain tested unproven drugs on elderly Covid-19 patients without their knowledge, the regulator's director told a Senate inquiry.

It was the first instance of a regulatory agency pledging to look into claims of wrongdoing at Prevent Senior, a major healthcare chain serving tens of thousands of patients in the Sao Paulo area.

Paulo Rebello Filho, head of the National Regulatory Agency for Private Health Insurance Plans (ANS), said his staff had detected "assistance abnormalities" at Prevent Senior and the health chain will be put under special technical supervision.

Suspect surrenders after hours long standoff at West Philadelphia home, police say

PHILADELPHIA - Authorities gathered outside a home in West Philadelphia on Wednesday night after police said a recently evicted tenant locked himself inside with two young children.Officers from the Philadelphia Police Department were called to a home on the 5500 block of West Girard Avenue just before 8 p.m.According to police, a 36-year-old man who was recently evicted from the property changed all the locks and violated a Protection From Abuse order. PHILADELPHIA - No one was injured after a gunman opened fire on a Philadelphia police officer during a shootout Wednesday afternoon in Germantown.Philadelphia Police Sergeant Eric Gripp told reporters that two plainclothes officers in an unmarked car were patrolling the 4800 block of Keyser Street around 2 p.m. when they came upon a shootout between a 23-year-old and a 20-year-old. The officer in the passenger's seat identified himself as police and ordered both men to drop their weapons when one of the men fired towards the officer, Gripp said. The officer ducked behind cover as the suspect attempted to flee down Keyser Street.
