WASHINGTON - President Joe Biden is set to sign a bill into law on Thursday that will make Juneteenth, or June 19, a new federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery.
Biden will sign the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act at 3:30 p.m. ET, according to the White House. Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris also are set to speak about the bill’s passage and the significance of the new federal holiday.Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers brought the news of freedom to enslaved Black people in Galveston, Texas — two months after the Confederacy had surrendered.
That was also about 2.5 years after the Emancipation Proclamation freed slaves in the Southern states.It’s the first new federal holiday since Martin.
