The Delta variant will represent 90% of all Covid-19 cases in the European Union, the European Centre for Disease Control has said.
In a threat assessment, published today, the ECDC said that the variant is more transmissible than other variants and preliminary data shows it can also infect people who have received only one dose of vaccine.
The centre said that the Delta variant will very likely circulate extensively during the summer, particularly among younger people that are not targeted for vaccination.
The ECDC said the good news is that full vaccination provides high protection against the Delta variant and its consequences.
