(Photo by Michael Ciaglo/Getty Images) WASHINGTON - Four cadets at the Air Force Academy may not graduate or be commissioned as military officers this month because they have refused the COVID-19 vaccine, and they may be required to pay back thousands of dollars in tuition costs, according to Air Force officials.It's the only military academy, so far, where cadets may face such penalties.

The Army and Navy said that as of now, not one of their seniors is being prevented from graduating at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, or the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, due to vaccine refusals.

The graduations are in about two weeks.Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin last year made the COVID-19 vaccinations mandatory for service members, including those at the military academies, saying the vaccine is critical to maintaining military readiness and the health of the force.Military leaders have argued that troops for decades have been required to get as many as 17 vaccines in order to maintain the health of the force, particularly those deploying overseas.

Students arriving at the military academies get a regimen of shots on their first day — such as measles, mumps and rubella - if they aren't already vaccinated.

According to the data obtained from the National Law Enforcement Officer Memorial Fund database for the year 2020, COVID-19 deaths accounted for 62% of the 295 duty-related law enforcement officer deaths.The study, published in "Policing: An International Journal," also found that 82% of deaths were among Black members of law enforcement and 77% of deaths were among Latinx officers — far higher than the 48% of deaths among White police officers.The database contained deaths designated as those caused by incidents that occurred while in the line of duty.To compute the rate of death, researchers from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) also obtained data on the total number of law enforcement officers employed in the U.S.

Ontario’s chief medical officer of health has announced that most of province’s remaining mask mandates will be lifted come Saturday.In a statement released Wednesday, Dr. Kieran Moore said most of the province’s remaining masking requirements will be lifted as of 12 a.m.It means the provincial requirement to wear masks in many settings deemed high risk will be dropped, though organizations can continue to make their own rules.The province’s mask mandate for most indoor public settings lifted on March 21, but rules were kept in place for settings deemed higher risk.Higher-risk settings included public transit, health-care settings, long-term care and retirement homes, as well as shelters and other congregate care settings that provide services to “medically and socially vulnerable individuals,” the province said.Mandates for those settings were previously set to be lifted on April 27, but were extended to June 11.

South Street Shooting: Murder charges to be filed against 2 suspects, DA says

PHILADELPHIA - Two individuals taken into custody in connection with Saturday's deadly mass shooting on South Street will be facing murder charges, Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner announced Thursday. This comes one day after officials released photos of two males who were identified as the third and fourth suspects in the shooting that left three people dead and nearly a dozen wounded on the popular Philadelphia street. Krasner identified the two suspects as Quadir Dukes-Hill, 18 and Nahjee Whittington, 18. Both were taken into custody by U.S. Marshalls in Virginia, according to Krasner. Officials say Dukes-Hill is facing murder charges in connection with the fatal shooting of Alexis Quinn, 27. According to Krasner, Whittington was just four days shy of his 18th birthday when he allegedly fired the shot that fatally struck Kristopher Minners, 22, and injured another man. Joanne Pescatore, the head of the DAO's Homicide Unit, said the department received several tips after posting photos of the suspects with a reward for information. Dukes-Hill and Whittington will be charged in adult court after a hearing in Virginia to extradite them back to Philadelphia. Pescatore says investigators believe the suspects are friends because they were seen wearing hoodies with the same logo and they are believed to have traveled to Virginia together. Two other suspects, Quran Garner and Rashaan Vereen, were taken into custody by authorities on Monday and they face several charges related to the shooting. Police believe the shooting stemmed from a fist fight between three men that escalated into a shootout.
