(Photo by Scott Olson/Getty Images) WASHINGTON - Twenty-one people have been charged in the past nine days as part of a nationwide enforcement push to root out those who exploit the pandemic through health care fraud schemes, the Justice Department announced Wednesday.The cases resulted in about $150 million in alleged false billings and theft from federal pandemic assistance programs.

The DOJ seized over $8 million in cash and other fraud proceeds.Some defendants are accused of offering COVID-19 testing to get people to provide their personal identifying information and a saliva or blood sample.

That information and the samples were then allegedly used to submit fraudulent claims to Medicare for unnecessary, far more expensive tests or services.In Colorado, federal agents went through a man's trash to uncover an alleged scheme to produce and sell fake vaccination record cards.

In Maryland and New York, owners of medical clinics are accused of using information from people who sought COVID testing at drive-thru sites to submit fraudulent claims for lengthy office visits that never occurred.Eighteen former NBA players have been criminally indicted as part of an alleged scheme to defraud the NBA's health and wellness plan for their players.

Houston flea market shooting leaves 2 dead and at least 3 injured

HOUSTON - Two people are dead and at least three others are hospitalized after a shooting at a Houston flea market on Sunday afternoon.It happened in broad daylight, just after 1 p.m., in the 8700 block of Airline Drive in north Harris County, a busy area where thousands of patrons visit flea markets for deals, food and outdoor activities."We thought it was something like for family, you know you can come with your kids, but with everything, you don’t know," said Dolores Guerrero, who visits the area often. "It’s scary."Guerrero says she often spends her Sundays in the area, which has numerous markets, restaurants and even clubs open for daytime dancing.

Buffalo mass shooting: Alleged shooter targeted Black neighborhood, officials say

NEW YORK - The white 18-year-old who fatally shot 10 people at a Buffalo supermarket researched the local demographics and arrived a day in advance to conduct reconnaissance with the intent of killing as many Black people as possible, officials said Sunday.The racially motivated attack came a year after the gunman was taken to a hospital by State Police after making threats involving his high school, according to authorities.He wasn't charged with a crime and was out of the hospital within a day and a half, police said, but the revelation raised questions about his access to weapons and whether he could have been under closer supervision by law enforcement.The Buffalo attack prompted grief and anger in the predominantly Black neighborhood around Tops Friendly Market.
